Anatomy of a Mat Board

Beauty and protection: These are the dual purposes of mat boards. Let’s start with beauty. The wide border of a mat board serves as “white space” that draws the viewer’s eye into your photograph or painting, offering stronger visual appeal.

Of course, aesthetics won’t last without protection. Mat boards serve to guard your art from resting directly against the glazing (the glass or acrylic overlaying the art) and from being discolored by the acidic properties of a wood frame.

When selecting a mat board, there are four main elements to consider. Check out our takes on Construction, Thickness, Acidity, and Color. And if we can help in any way, let us know!
