Our picture frames are indexed by artwork size. Artwork size is the actual size of the photograph, inkjet or other print being framed. The opening in our mats is cut a little smaller on standard sizes (that appear in the size drop-down selector) than the artwork so that the mat will hold the artwork down. Most off-the-shelf standard sized ready-made frames will crop 1/4 to 1/2 inch of each side of the photograph. Most of our customers feel this is too much and we agree. For that reason our picture frame mats for artwork smaller than 18x24 inches are cut to overlap just 1/8 inch on all 4 sides. That means the actual or exact opening of the mat will be 1/4 inch less total for standard sizes. For example our mat opening for 4x6 photographs is 3.75 x 5.75 inches. Frames for artwork 18x24 and larger are cut to overlap 1/4 inch on all 4 sides so the mat for an 18x24 print will be 17.5 x 23.5. Please note: On custom sized mats where you enter the size, we will cut the mat exactly to the dimensions that you specify.

About Mat Board

Frame Destination offers a unique selection of archival and decorative mat board suitable for all of your matting and framing needs. Mat board protects artwork by separating the glazing from the artwork, which allows air to circulate within the picture frame and prevents the buildup of harmful moisture that can lead to water damage and staining. It is especially important to use a mat when framing photographic art, because the surface of the print can be easily damaged by moisture.
A mat can help shield your artwork from harm that comes from acids. Acid-free products, including mats, are useful in keeping acids away from the artwork's surface, and protect it from staining and other surface damage. In addition, a mat helps to hold down the artwork, keeping it flat and secured in place within the picture frame. Matboard is also used in a decorative sense when framing artwork. Using a colored mat can add depth and enhance the art's look inside the picture frame.
