Frames to Accent Contemporary Design

contemporary framesMinimalistic, natural and even distressed are the hallmarks of today's contemporary picture frames. The lack of detail and understated appearance of contemporary picture frames puts the artifact front and center, without ornate detailing to detract from the painting or photo. The growing appeal of modern Scandinavian design has been a major influence on today's preferences, particularly the increasing popularity of minimalist furniture.

Clear, satiny wood finishes that feature the natural beauty of the wood grain are becoming a favorite with interior decorators, as well as frames made from salvaged wood with a “distressed” look. Painted wood frames are out this year; more natural shades of brown and gray are in.

Metal frames in silvery shades are in vogue these days for the purpose of framing photographs. Here too, the “distressed” look is popular, such as a surface that has been hammered slightly for a “pebbled” appearance.

Do you recommend what color of frames go well in darker rooms? I have a room in the basement with dark walls. Should I be looking to choose a lighter color picture frame?

Usually the top priority is to select a frame color that goes well with the artwork. Something that helps to set it off from the wall in the case of gallery style frames and in the case of custom frames helps to highlight and or extend the artwork. Once that is accomplished you want to make sure that the frame sets the artwork off from the wall so it does not have to be a light color but it should not be the same. In general lighter colors will be easier. How light will depend on the kind of look your are going for and how much you want them to stand out.
