Yes, there are now plenty of expenses and other things to deal with, but my business background of being a retired executive who ran a 21-location retail company provided me with plenty of business chops to deal with running a single gallery. But there are always surprises!\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Here’s how I maneuvered the process in Cape Cod, Massachusetts and a few tips I can offer other creatives contemplating their own gallery. Wait for the Right Location-Location-Location\u003C/h3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>My wife Dena and I set out to find a property on the Cape that not only had a building adequate to house a gallery but also would include a house in which we would now live. The search lasted for more than 2 ½ years, but eventually we found an antique Cape house with a barn both built in the mid 1800’s. Even better, the property was dual-zoned residential/business, and the location had good visibility. Now we’re on our way to opening an art gallery!\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>After getting town clearance to have the business, comes the necessary commercial insurance and if you choose, forming an LLC. If you are up for a gallery-owning adventure, be sure to have a serious discussion with your insurance agent and/or your attorney. \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Give Visitors a Full Experience\u003C/h3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The first big decision was what to do with the barn; completely update the interior to “vanilla” walls or keep it as original as possible. After speaking with numerous people in and out of the art world it was unanimous: KEEP THE BARN ORIGINAL! And so, we did. With the big-time help of my father-in-law John and his buddy Curtis doing needed structural repairs, and having a professional electrician install the needed lights to show art, the “art-barn” was born and ready to exhibit art. \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The barn is a conversation piece for many visitors, and in its own way, it is art. Many people have a strong love for antique Cape Cod barns, and ours definitely has a personality that connects with many from its wide plank floors, wooden beams across the ceiling, and even the aged paint splashed walls that all say “art.” It is pretty cool, and so Cape Cod!\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cfigure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\">\u003Cimg data-public-id=\"blog/FD-BobbyBaker_Feature3/FD-BobbyBaker_Feature3.jpg\" src=\"https://res.cloudinary.com/frame-destination/images/w_605,h_454,c_scale/f_auto,q_auto/v1661443244/blog/FD-BobbyBaker_Feature3/FD-BobbyBaker_Feature3.jpg?_i=AA\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-post-6030 wp-image-6046\" data-format=\"jpg\" data-transformations=\"f_auto,q_auto\" data-version=\"1661443244\" data-seo=\"1\">\u003C/figure>\n\n\n\n\u003Cdiv aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\">\u003C/div>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. It’s All About Presentation - Choose Wisely when Displaying the Art\u003C/h3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Hanging art on anything but flat, even walls and expecting it to stay, is a challenge. The Gallery System Art Displays hanging system solved the problems with their easy to customize art hanging approach. We highly recommend it for business and home application. \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Also an important aspect of the presentation of the art is how it’s framed and the quality of the framing materials. My prints are finished with Frame Destination products, usually black \u003Ca href=\"https://www.framedestination.com/wood-frame-profile-503.html\">Wood Profile 503\u003C/a> with Crescent 4 or 8 ply mats with glass glazing. This combo always presents a high quality, gallery ready, product for our clients. \u003Ca href=\"https://www.framedestination.com/foam-board-self-adhesive-permanent-3-16.html\">Foam Board Self-Adhesive Permanent 3/16\u003C/a> - Mounting assures that the fine art print will not ever curl under glass, and Kraft Backing Paper Dust Cover Paper adds a very nice finishing touch and keeps dust out of the framed print. \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>I am also fortunate to have my wife Dena’s gifted merchandising eye to create great art displays with her “special touch” that makes people feel more “Cape” when visiting our gallery – and she also does an amazing job as our in-house framer.  \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Offer Authenticity \u003C/h3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>There are a zillion art galleries on Cape Cod, most are open only for the season (late spring to late fall) with very few staying open all year long. Tourism drives the Cape in “season” not unlike other seasonal destinations, and that is when you want to be ready to rock for business! Since there are so many galleries here, it’s important to be something special, something that sets you apart from all the others. Our barn does provide some of that for us, but it is my black & white art that is well-known, and that which people come to see in our unique Cape Cod setting. It does set us apart from others.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>My work had become well established through other galleries, exhibits, magazines, etc. and of course would now be the featured art of our new gallery. For our very first Cape season we decided to be a gallery that also featured numerous other Cape artists; painters, potters, fiber artist. This was part of the learning process. With each year we learned more about what worked, and what didn’t. Space, especially wall space, is very valuable and you can’t afford to use it for extended periods of time for art that is not selling. Also, we learned the importance of being unique. No matter how talented an artist may be, if their work is in every shop, gallery, and roadside stand, you have nothing unique to show your clients – they’ve already seen it! Regarding any artist that you may represent, it is vital that you are well-versed on their “story” as it is so important to be able to successfully present that to potential clients.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Curate as Needed when Demand Shifts\u003C/h3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Working with other artists is interesting as well. If their work is not selling, they look to you to be sure that you are promoting it, merchandising it properly, and doing all that you are supposed to do as a gallery manager to sell the art. There are so many reasons as to why a piece won’t sell or will sell. We had one very talented painter who we couldn’t keep enough of her work on the wall as almost every piece sold as soon as we got it. Conversely, we had another painter whose work would just not move, could not find the right “connection.” Their work got plenty of compliments but no dollars, and such is the way it goes sometimes. With each new season, we slimmed our artist roster and used more space for my work, which was selling well. Eventually we decided we needed the entire gallery just for my work to be able to show a larger selection as it became clear that people were coming to BBG for my work, and not a collection of others; there were plenty of other galleries on the Cape to see paintings, pottery, and other cool artwork.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6. Have a Flexible Advertising Plan \u003C/h3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Getting the word out about one’s business is also challenging as there is no shortage of avenues to advertise, but we have a budget to adhere to for what we can spend on ads. It’s so important to do your research and find out where your dollar can reach the most people - and the most appropriate audience. We get bombarded each spring with every magazine and tourist pamphlet outlet looking for us to buys ads. Social media can also be a help if you have cultivated a following for your art. \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>As with any new business you are starting from “0” and working to grow each year, or season. By the year 2020 we had several years of experience and were nicely entrenched in the Cape art scene. We continually tweaked our presentation to best accommodate what our client base was drawn to. We happen to live in one of those states that overreacted to a virus with mandated lockdowns, closing most businesses. By the time there was even a little wiggle room for businesses to reopen with limited hours and crazy restrictions, our “season” had passed and we, like so many others, had lost a year. Losing a year’s revenue is pretty damaging, but the negative effects of being closed for an extended period doesn’t just end. In many ways, you are starting over again rebuilding an awareness of your business’ existence. Just another challenge of having your own business in this day and age. \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>If there was a positive to come from the dormant 2020, it would be the creation of the Bobby Baker Gallery online store ( \u003Ca href=\"http://www.BobbyBaker.Gallery\">www.BobbyBaker.Gallery\u003C/a> ) which provided access to our art 24/7 for everyone, not just Cape residents and visitors. We shipped art across the US and Europe by way of the online gallery. I really didn’t want to have an online gallery/store, but as the days went by without any sales while being closed, it sure made sense to get the online version of BBG up and running ASAP!\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7. Stay Positive\u003C/h3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>By the time the summer of 2021 rolled around people had had enough of being constrained and were ready to hit the beaches and live again…and yes, the Cape “summer people” and the tourists visiting us were ready to buy art! In so many ways, art can lift one’s soul. I have seen the look in a client’s eyes when they connect with a piece as the image takes them to a special time or place…its very cool. And it felt as if many people wanted a piece of the Cape by way of my art. It was a very good year for our gallery. \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>As I write this article, our 2022 summer season on Cape Cod has begun. All signs point to things being closer to “normal” than they have been the past few years, meaning lots of summer tourists and hopefully a lot of art lovers. There is no question that the Cape is a special place. It has its own distinctive vibe, its own style, and it lends itself so well to creating art. What is your background; how did you get started?\u003C/em>\u003C/strong>\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>My mother is a top abstract painter and I grew up painting along side of her in her studio. While she did huge non-representational art, I did small studies and closeups of animals, mostly horses. I received a degree in fine art and intended to go into illustration, but I found it unfulfilling. After taking a workshop from an incredible pencil artist, I knew I had found my passion. I did exclusively pencil early in my career, but have branched out to pastels, oils, and occasionally acrylics. I live in Colorado where the scenery is just gorgeous, and have become an avid plein air painter. I've taken a number of workshops over the years from artists I admire, and still take them on occasion when I'm feeling the need for a new perspective. In the last couple of years I have begun teaching as a way to give back — a few private students and one workshop so far.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>2\u003C/strong>\u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>. What role do you think the artist plays in society?\u003C/em>\u003C/strong>\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Art is an international language. No matter where you are from, what language you speak, what your education level is, art transcends all levels of society and culture. It can represent beauty, pain, courage, an idea, an event, or just be a mass of design and color. It elicits emotion for the artist as well as the viewer. Personally, I strive for my art to bring beauty and stop a moment in time. \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>3. What has been a formative experience or the best advice you’ve received within your career?\u003C/em>\u003C/strong>\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Marketing is not my strong suit, but one of those necessities of the business if my goal is to sell. I had a very successful artist convey this to me in one simple sentence: \"You can't sell it if it's under the bed.” And so I have made a presence for myself on social media, advertised in national magazines, participated in juried events, conducted demos for art groups, etc. It's been a learning process for sure and I've become more comfortable in that part of the job.  \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>4. In what ways does your work reflect your personality?\u003C/em>\u003C/strong>\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>I incorporate what I love into my work. I have had at least one horse for most of my life, so you'll see a lot of equestrian themes in my art. Because I also love the mountains and nature, plein air as well as studio landscape painting is a big part of my work. I'm not one for depicting disturbing scenes, but rather beauty and interesting compositions. If I've painted it or drawn it, it means I've seen it and/or experienced it.  \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>5. Creative blocks, do you get them? If so, how do you overcome them?\u003C/em>\u003C/strong>\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>I think I've been doing this too long to really get blocked. If I have a deadline or a commission, I just get going on it. I guess my problem will be that my work will start to feel a little tight since I do mostly realism. When this happens, I get a giant canvas and some acrylic paint and channel my Mom in her studio from my childhood and just start indiscriminately putting paint on canvas with my largest brush. I have found that I really do enjoy abstract painting quite a lot! \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>6. What is your most indispensable tool? (Not counting the obvious, like paints, brushes, canvas, camera, etc.)\u003C/em>\u003C/strong>\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>My biggest \"aha\" moment in drawing and painting was discovering the importance of value. It can be a lot harder to figure out than you think. In fact, often times if my painting or drawing isn't working, it's that my value is off. I have a red transparent filter that I will hold up to my artwork that will help me see my values. The filter helps me to observe my scene when I’m working in the field, or I can view my photo reference with it and compare it to my artwork. It's really helpful. In fact, when I teach, the first thing I do is give each student one of these filters. I bought some clear red sheets and mounted them in little precut mats to hand out.  \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>7. Do you have a new project you are working on, or a new passionate idea?\u003Cbr>\u003C/em>\u003C/strong>\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>I actually received a commission for a HUGE painting. It's 4 feet x 7.5 feet. It has involved stretching a canvas, something I had never done before. My Mom was going to come for the Christmas holiday and show me how to do it, but with COVID, the trip was canceled. I got all the supplies, watched a YouTube video, and managed to get it done.  It's not rocket science, but there are some finer points that must be adhered to to make the canvas look okay. I'm about 90 percent done with the painting and the client loves it! I'll hopefully get it to her in the next couple of months. My client lives in another state, which I visit a couple of times a year by car, so I'll take the canvas off the stretcher bars, roll it up, pack it in the car, and reassemble it when I get to her hometown. It has been such a fun project that I ordered more large stretcher bars and canvas to do a piece for a short term rental that I own. It should really spice up the room! I've already done some thumbnail sketches and can't wait to start!\u003Cbr>\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>8. What is your favorite color to incorporate into your art?\u003C/em>\u003C/strong>\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>My favorite color, and the one I use the most in my work, is Ultramarine Blue Deep. It can be residential or corporate, it doesn’t matter to me. I love the challenge of drawing out the buyer’s wants/hopes/desires for the piece and then figuring out how to make them happen. It can be quite magical. I have had a fully-formed image swagger into my head of the finished piece while I am sitting in our initial meeting! Other times, I have to eek it out of the canvas as I go, bribing and cajoling all along the way.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>I love it all.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Until…\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>…I have to show it to the buyer for the first time.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>I panic. My heart rate increases, my anxiety rears its ugly head, and the internal critic starts telling me how the client is going to be so disappointed; how I missed it by a mile. What was I thinking using that color? Or that brush? I am sure it will be too wild or too colorful for the client. No doubt, there will be regrets about ever having asked me to paint for them.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>I take the best possible photo I can. Often doing at least a dozen before I feel it shows the piece to its best advantage. Then I email or text it off to the client.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>And I wait.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>And wait.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>I chew my finger nails. I plan out how to handle the rejection. I wonder why I ever decided to become an artist.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>And I wait some more.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Ten minutes later comes the typical reply “We love it!! How did you ever capture us so exactly?”\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>I breathe again. \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Commissions can certainly be a roller coaster of emotion, but they are much more manageable and successful, I’ve found, by deploying a few techniques. Here are my top 3 tips for navigating the process:\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. \u003Cstrong>Ask Some Specific Questions in the Initial Meeting\u003C/strong>\u003C/h3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>I use a combination of the following:\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n\u003Cli>What do you want to feel when you look at this piece?\u003C/li>\n\n\n\n\u003Cli>What keywords represent those feelings or ideas?\u003C/li>\n\n\n\n\u003Cli>Are there specific colors or color combinations that represent you, your brand (if commercial), or your space?\u003C/li>\n\n\n\n\u003Cli>Any colors I should absolutely avoid?\u003C/li>\n\n\n\n\u003Cli>Is there a particular song that evokes this feeling for you? Or one that means something to you and your partner?\u003C/li>\n\n\n\n\u003Cli>What else is currently in the space where this will hang?\u003C/li>\n\n\n\n\u003Cli>In the case of an anniversary commission, I will ask for stories or memories of their life together.\u003C/li>\n\u003C/ul>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cbr>2. During the Feedback Phase, Discuss a Few Finishing Details\u003C/h3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>After the client has seen the piece and given initial feedback, we discuss minor tweaks if necessary and delivery options. We also explore different framing options that they may wish to use. Sometimes they have me add the frame for them, other times the buyer may handle framing on their own once I deliver the piece. When my buyers ask me to frame the paintings for them, I most often rely on simple and sleek canvas floater frames. I find they crisp up my work without competing with the art itself. Enhance Your Client’s Experience with a Professional Presentation \u003C/h3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>If local I arrange a time to hand deliver the piece. I can not live without GalleryPouch bags. Not only do I use them for the storage of my works in my studio, but I also use them when transporting commissions and purchases to local clients. These are the best way to transport art I’ve found. They are also reusable and sealable, so clients love having them in case they have to store or move any artwork in the future. It’s an extra added benefit I provide to make the experience even more special and to protect the art’s longevity. If the client is not local, I prepare the piece in specialty \u003Ca href=\"https://www.framedestination.com/blog/resources/pack-and-ship-artwork\">packaging\u003C/a> and drag it to the shippers to insure and send it. \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>It’s a very nerve racking thing to send your “child” off with strangers. (Much like when I used to send my daughter off on a plane as an unaccompanied minor to visit her grandparents.) You beg the shipping gods not to let anyone step on the package, or stack a ton of heavy boxes on it, or crash the truck it’s in. You obsessively check the tracking information to make sure it arrives at its destination. Then you sit on your hand so that you don’t text or call the buyer too soon. Let them receive it, open it, feel it out… then reach out to make sure they are still as pleased with it now that they have seen it in person.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>They love it more. WHEW!\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>And then the internal glow starts. The happiness and pride grow and I feel like I am floating around my studio. I feel amazing and so grateful that they love it. What’s great about picture frame profiles is that both form and function are working together. Their \u003Cstrong>function\u003C/strong> is to provide important information about the picture frame such as its width, height, and rabbet width/depth. Their various \u003Cstrong>forms\u003C/strong> serve as a creative element of the frame’s moulding.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Little Background on Moulding\u003C/h2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Standard picture frames are composed of four pieces of moulding, also spelled molding. Picture frame moulding is a piece of wood or metal that has been shaped into a specific style and features a \u003Ca href=\"https://www.framedestination.com/info/picture-framing-glossary.html\">rabbet\u003C/a> for holding the frame’s contents. There are many different styles and colors of picture frames; however, today we are going to talk about how to understand frame profiles.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Picture frame moulding is generally sold to framers in lengths between 7 and 10 feet, which are then chopped to make individual frames. \u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>The profile is the outline of a frame moulding\u003C/em>\u003C/strong>’\u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>s cross section. \u003C/em>\u003C/strong>(Akin to the profile of a person’s face.) Moulding catalogs typically include an illustration of each moulding profile along with corresponding measurements. We provide an illustration with measurements for each profile on the Frame Destination website.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why the Variety of Outlines?\u003C/h2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>When you see these cross-sections by themselves, you might wonder, why the crazy shapes … the bumps, the dips, the leaning lines? Well, frame profiles come in an array of options for a few reasons. So that you can:\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>1. Choose to complement or heighten the style of your artwork.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>2. Enrich the architectural detail of a given space.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>3. Accommodate a particular artwork depth or size.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Another reason could be that moulding artisans are creative like you and me, and get bored of the same old frame designs! \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Going on a Road Trip\u003C/strong>\u003C/h3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Reading a frame profile is a little like reading a map. Of course, we all know that a map reveals routes to a destination and how many miles it will take to get there. A frame profile informs you of crucial measurements that relate to whether your art, mat, and glazing will fit within that frame. It also reveals the “scenery” in the form of the profile shape. The height also tells you how far the frame will stand out from the wall, which is important if you are displaying art in a space where you are concerned about people bumping into it. \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Heel.\u003C/strong> Bottom edge of the frame farthest away from the artwork. \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Lip.\u003C/strong> The inside edge of a moulding that is equivalent to the rabbet’s width. Pay attention to this measurement if you are framing unmatted artwork because it will determine how much of the art is covered by the frame. \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Rabbet.\u003C/strong> The interior portion of the picture frame; holds the frame’s components, including the glazing, mat(s), artwork, and backing. \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Rabbet Height/Depth.\u003C/strong> This very important measurement tells you how much room is available for the frame’s components. \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Rabbet Width.\u003C/strong> This measurement tells you the width of the underside of the moulding’s lip. As with the frame’s lip, pay attention to this measurement if you are framing unmatted artwork because it will determine how much of the art is covered by the frame. \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Common Picture Frame Profiles\u003C/h2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Below are some common frame profiles. What is your background; how did you get started?\u003C/em>\u003C/strong>\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>I always loved to draw, paint, craft stuff. But I really got serious about painting around 1990 with my first solo exhibition in the South of France. I was doing watercolors at the time and that was my favorite medium for many years. I actually got to experiment with water-mixable oils much later on, in 2009 or so, when I wanted to paint larger pieces. I used to exhibit mostly solo, in casual venues such as coffee shops and restaurants. In 2012 I took a leap of faith and created my own art gallery.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>2\u003C/strong>\u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>. What role do you think the artist plays in society?\u003C/em>\u003C/strong>\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>I am convinced that art is a profound means of expressing all that is unbearably beautiful, ineffable, unspeakable, wondrous, or unfathomable. Art helps us humans cope with our mortality, and all that we can't pragmatically approach. Above all, an artist is a channel of expression taking in all that is, and offering her own version of what comes through. An artist has also something special that is invaluable: a worldwide license to mingle with any societal group, any gender, and any language, without having to conform to their specificity. As such, we can be messengers, ambassadors, defenders, revealers, catalysts — and become part of profound paradigm changes in our own unique ways.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>3. What has been a formative experience or the best advice you’ve received within your career?\u003C/em>\u003C/strong>\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>As a very young child I had the privilege to sit in my neighbor's studio and cuddle his dog while he stood at his easel painting away. I guess it gave me the notion I could create my own world in that intangible space I would later call \"the zone.” \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>4. In what way does your work reflect your personality?\u003C/em>\u003C/strong>\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>For many years I have been orienting my life toward being in a state of peace, and to deliberately cultivate emotional balance and mental clarity. Inner spaciousness, so to speak. To paint vast and serene scenes is the reflection and the cultivation of that inner space. It's like a visual meditation that I get to share with the world.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>5. Creative blocks, do you get them? If so, how do you overcome them?\u003C/em>\u003C/strong>\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>I would not say that I have creative blocks, but I do have periods of active execution and periods of what I call “percolating,” when I don't paint, per se, on any canvas, but when I’m being nurtured for future work.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>6. What is your most indispensable tool? (Not counting the obvious, like paints, brushes, canvas, camera, etc.)\u003C/em>\u003C/strong>\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>A quiet, comfortable, organized, personal space — full of light and open time.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>7. Do you have a new project you are working on, or a new passionate idea?\u003C/em>\u003C/strong>\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>After running my own art gallery for eight years, I’m transitioning to showing my work essentially online. It is also a common one used with widescreen TVs and computer monitors. Rectangle in shape, this ratio results in a size that’s slightly longer than the 4:3 ratio.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Are the Standard Photo Sizes Used for Prints?\u003C/h2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Photo prints offer the opportunity to transform your digital work or creative art into a print that can be enjoyed by many. But get the sizing wrong, and you could end up losing resolution or end up with certain elements off print due to necessary cropping. This makes it crucial to understand standard picture sizes with ratios. \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4 x 6 inches\u003C/h3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Arguably the most popular or normal photo size, the 4x6” photo print fits like a glove into a 3:2 aspect ratio, making it perfect for framed greeting cards, postcards, photos, and more. As for pixel length, shoot for 1200 x 1800 pixels for the highest quality resolution.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5 x 7 inches\u003C/h3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Measuring slightly larger, the 5x7” is a great size for smaller photo prints and artwork. When using a digital camera to capture images, we suggest a 3.5:2.5 aspect ratio. As for pixels, 1500 x 2100 pixels is typically best.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">8 x 10 inches\u003C/h3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In the middle of the pack, we have the 8x10” sized photo print. For this size, an aspect ratio of 5:4 on your camera is usually the ideal setting. Although this may result in the need for minor cropping on the sides, it should be minimal. Because of this, you may want to position the art or photo such that there isn’t anything important at the top or bottom of the print to allow room for cropping. \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">8.5 x 11 inches\u003C/h3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Ideal for large print frames or small posters, the best results for an 8.5” x 11” can be had with an aspect ratio of 4:3 and resizing the image to around 3400 x 4400 pixels.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">12 x 18 inches \u003C/h3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Ideal for larger photographs, pixel sizes of around 3600 x 5400 are ideal, as is an aspect ratio of 3.2 for optimal results.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">18 x 24 inches \u003C/h3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>As we scale up in size, so should your desired image.
