Professional artists and photographers often prefer this method when mounting their original pieces for clients. Other examples are collectors who purchased artworks at an auction, movie buffs who want to mount a limited-edition poster, and sports fans who scored keepsake tickets to a championship game. In other words, anyone in possession of a valuable piece of art is qualified to preserve that art in the most effective way possible. \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Even though I fit into the professional artist category, I’m also someone who has a few boxes full of sentimentally valuable items tucked away in a closet. One box in particular holds items I fully intend to mount and display ... someday. \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Someday Finally Came\u003C/strong>\u003C/h3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In this blog post, I’m focusing on how to use our \u003Ca href=\"https://www.framedestination.com/prod/s/museum-mounting-kit.html\">Museum Mounting Kit\u003C/a> to mount my grandfather’s hand-written plant identification cards. I wrote about these cards in a \u003Ca href=\"https://www.framedestination.com/blog/diy/the-best-way-to-preserve-old-documents-plants-and-keepsakes\">blog on preservation\u003C/a> a few years ago. They’ve been safely stored inside an \u003Ca href=\"https://www.framedestination.com/prod/c/archival-photo-storage-box-acid-free.html\">archival photo storage box\u003C/a> for the last six years.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Since I wrote the article, we’ve purchased a new home and finally have the wall space to frame and display some of these carefully crafted plant ID cards — a precious gift to someone like me who loves plants and makes a living illustrating them.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Our \u003Ca href=\"https://www.framedestination.com/prod/s/museum-mounting-kit.html\">Museum Mounting Kit\u003C/a> is manufactured by Lineco and it contains the same materials used by museum professionals to mount valuable pieces of art. The kit comes with full, detailed instructions. It is a traditional, archival, and non-toxic product used in picture framing. You can make wheat starch paste on a stovetop; I used a small glass jar in the microwave for this project. \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Per Lineco’s instructions, I used six teaspoons of water per one teaspoon of wheat starch. Add the water to a container — in my case a small glass jar — and slowly add the wheat starch, mixing until completely blended. Microwave on medium-high uncovered, checking every 10 seconds until the paste thickens. It took about 40 seconds for mine. Cover the paste and let stand until it cools into a semi-solid mass. Since I didn’t have one available, I just diluted the paste with a little water when I was making the hinges. To do it the proper way, you can buy a small fine-mesh strainer at a local cooking store. \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Store the paste in a cool, dark place and discard within two to five days or when you detect a sour smell. My paste lasted a solid week, but I live in a cool climate (western North Carolina) and kept it in our basement. \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hinging the Plant ID Cards\u003C/h3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>I decided to frame three of the \u003Cem>Ilex\u003C/em> (holly) genus plant ID cards since holly is one of my favorite plants. For this demonstration, I chose the \u003Cem>Ilex vomitoria \u003C/em>(Yaupon Holly), a beautiful southeastern tree with bright red berries, which are an important food source for birds. Bees produce a delicious honey from its flowers and the leaves makes a type of \u003Ca href=\"https://yauponbrothers.com/\">caffeinated tea\u003C/a> that happens to be the only naturally caffeinated herbal tea commercially harvested in North America. \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The hinges for this project were created using Japanese hinging paper, which is a high-quality paper made from mulberry tree fibers. I used a T-hinge to mount the plant ID card to the mount board. \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>T-hinges are used when the hinge can be hidden by a window mat. They are among the easier art mounting techniques. The trick is to line up your artwork properly on the mount board. I recommend using a fractional ruler to get a proper alignment unless you are good at eyeballing dimensions.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Below is an illustration of a proper T-hinge configuration. The pendant hinge is secured to the print first, and then strengthened by the application of a crosspiece, making a hinge shaped like the letter “T.” The entire T-hinge is then covered by a window mat board.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cfigure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\">\u003Cimg data-public-id=\"blog/FD-Blog_MuseumMounting-3/FD-Blog_MuseumMounting-3.jpg\" src=\"https://res.cloudinary.com/frame-destination/images/w_800,h_800,c_fill,g_auto/f_auto,q_auto/v1663876168/blog/FD-Blog_MuseumMounting-3/FD-Blog_MuseumMounting-3.jpg?_i=AA\" alt=\"T-Hinge Photo or Art\" class=\"wp-post-6368 wp-image-6371\" data-format=\"jpg\" data-transformations=\"f_auto,q_auto\" data-version=\"1663876168\" data-seo=\"1\">\u003C/figure>\n\n\n\n\u003Cdiv aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\">\u003C/div>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Wearing gloves to protect my mounting materials from the oils on my hands, I tore the Japanese hinging paper into (loosely) pre-measured strips. My aim was to place them to the left and right of the “Plant Materials” card title to avoid the hole punches. I typically prefer to cut my hinges with scissors; however, Lineco states that tearing the Japanese paper results in a feathered look that makes the hinges less visible. I did not use a V-hinge for this mounting application, so the Mylar\u003Csup>®\u003C/sup> separation sheets weren’t needed. Also, because this image was so small (8½” W x 5½” H), I didn’t think the linen tape for hinging the window mat to the backboard was necessary. Or you scored a limited-edition print at last Saturday’s flea market. Maybe you created an amazing watercolor or photograph — one of your favorites ever. Whatever the case, if you want to preserve and prolong the life of precious and unique artworks, you’ll want to frame them in a sound, archival way. \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Conservation-style framing uses materials which minimize the artwork’s deterioration by environmental factors. The benefit of hinge mounting is that it’s considered an archival method of mounting artwork — but only if you’re using proper \u003Ca href=\"https://www.framedestination.com/ctg/framing-accessories/photo-mounting-supplies/hinging-tape-tissue.html\">acid-free hinging tape\u003C/a>. These specialty tapes adhere art to the mounting board without touching the face of the art. They also have a forgivable “reversibility” quality that allows you to peel the tape off your art without harming it.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>With hinge mounting, you’re using strips of tape that serve as “hinges” connecting the art to the mount board. A subgroup of hinging tape is hinging tissue. The latter is thinner and more transparent than tape and is best used with translucent or super lightweight artwork. \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Below I outline the three most common ways to mount your artwork onto a backer board in an archival, conservation-style way using hinging tape. They’re simple-yet-genius processes that I’m sure you’ll embrace once you try them. Later on, I break down “good, bad, and ugly” methods of mounting artwork. \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3 Types of Hinges for Mounting Artwork\u003C/h2>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Pendant Hinge\u003C/h3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>This is a common hinge made by attaching a strip of hinging tape or tissue paper to the top of the artwork, adhering the upper half of the strip to the mounting board. This hinge assumes that you’re using a mat; otherwise, it will be visible. I always hinge the left and right sides of the art — plus the middle if it’s a wide image. Plan your placement before you attach the tape. One side is applied to the back side of the artwork. The other half is then applied to the mounting board. If the artwork is executed on a heavy substrate, such as 300-pound watercolor paper, use a crosspiece for greater stability. The beauty of this hinge is how it’s hidden behind the art, so you can frame the image without a mat board, reducing your framing costs. Both are made for heavier prints and artwork. They use a water-activated adhesive made with carbohydrate and protein, which features a neutral pH and is deemed safe for photos and fine art. \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In addition, I suggest using an acid-free \u003Ca href=\"https://www.framedestination.com/ctg/framing-supplies/foam-board.html\">mount board\u003C/a> as the attachment base. There are several types available including Acid Free 3/16” and 1/8” foam board, Artcare foam, and Uncut Blanks of 2-Ply AlphaRag. \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>Geeking Out:\u003C/em>\u003C/strong> Are you a techie by nature and love the thought of delving deep into the chemical and mechanical aspects of framing? I have taken a few of Chris’s workshops in person and she knows more about framing than ALL the larger POD and frame-it-and-ship-it shops on the Internet combined!\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Bad and the Ugly\u003C/h3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Over the years, I’ve encountered many less-than-stellar mounting jobs. Can I say just it? Some were a hot mess! As such, I feel like it’s important to mention a few “don’t-do-this-if-you-care-about-presentation” suggestions.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cfigure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\">\u003Cimg data-public-id=\"blog/BadandUgly/BadandUgly.png\" src=\"https://res.cloudinary.com/frame-destination/images/w_800,h_800,c_fill,g_auto/f_auto,q_auto/v1663015616/blog/BadandUgly/BadandUgly.png?_i=AA\" alt=\"back photo mounting with tape\" class=\"wp-post-6264 wp-image-6269\" data-format=\"png\" data-transformations=\"f_auto,q_auto\" data-version=\"1663015616\" data-seo=\"1\">\u003C/figure>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Not Just Any Old Tape Will Do\u003C/h3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Run-of-the-mill office tape, masking tape, and duct tape are made for household uses like wrapping presents, creating science projects, or fixing your leaking toilet. These are incredibly useful products — just not for framing your priceless photos and art. They aren’t designed for it. \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Most of these everyday tapes should never be called upon in picture framing. The adhesives used in these products vary, but they usually contain synthetic or natural rubber and rubber-based adhesives which can become yellow, oily, and sticky as they age, damaging the artwork along the way. It’s not pretty, my friends.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Acrylic adhesives (like hinging tapes) are much more stable over time, and do not significantly discolor art and photos.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Other Photo Mounting Methods You Should Dump\u003C/h2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n\u003Cli>\u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>Hinging the artwork on all four sides\u003C/em>. \u003C/strong>Think of art as a living object that is executed, at least in part, onto or with organic ingredients. As such, it requires the freedom to expand and contract with temperature changes. Proper mounting — hinging at the top of the artwork only — allows the bottom of the art to float freely and expand/contract with normal temperature changes in a home. Taping it on all four sides basically “traps” the art, which will almost certainly cause it to warp.  \u003C/li>\n\u003C/ul>\n\n\n\n\u003Cul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n\u003Cli>\u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>Stapling artwork to the backer board.\u003C/em>\u003C/strong> Putting holes in your original artwork is never a good idea, and the metal in the staples can potentially discolor your image. \u003C/li>\n\u003C/ul>\n\n\n\n\u003Cul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n\u003Cli>\u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>Using cardboard as backer board.\u003C/em>\u003C/strong> Although carboard is readily available, convenience is not a long-range benefit. Cardboard will leak acids into your artwork and discolor it as quickly as six months after framing.  \u003C/li>\n\u003C/ul>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Your Future Hinges on This Tape\u003C/h2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Okay, that’s an overstatement. In addition, your art should be placed where it won't be damaged by things like moisture or airborne particulates like dust.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">To Frame or Not to Frame?\u003C/h2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Perhaps the biggest question that you'll have to ask yourself is whether or not you should frame your art. Generally speaking, it's a good idea to frame your art. This will protect it from damage and make it look much more professional. \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>However, if you're working with a piece that already has a nice frame or if you want the art to stand out on its own without distraction, then don't feel obligated to get one. Either way, framing is a personal preference and will depend on the piece you're working with. It's a good idea to ask yourself why you want to frame your art before making your decision.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Choosing Glass for Fine Art Framing\u003C/h2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Glass is the most common type used in fine art framing. It's made of tempered or laminated glass, which can be very strong and durable. Most people use it to protect their artwork from dust and moisture, as well as sunlight (which can fade colors). Here are some of the factors to consider when \u003Ca href=\"https://www.framedestination.com/blog/glazing/about-artglass-and-types\">choosing art glass for framing\u003C/a>:\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. I noticed that no matter my own mood, Sammy’s only response was love. This was tremendously impressive, and eventually led to my own evolution inward, thinking that if we could all achieve what dogs are expressing naturally as unconditional love, what a beautiful world it would be! From that point on, my heart was opened and I decided to paint my first canvas of Sammy. This led to creating a life of celebrating our deep connection with dogs through my work as a painter.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>2\u003C/strong>\u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>. What is your background; how did you get started?\u003C/em>\u003C/strong>\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Hypo [a chemical used in darkrooms] clearly ran through my veins while I was \"developing\" inside my Mom. My father was a news photographer for the \u003Cem>Newark Evening News\u003C/em> from the 1950s to the 1970s. He often took me with him to the Art Department of the paper to watch his photos develop. It was magic to my eyes and and this girl was hooked. Dad handed me my first camera, a good old Kodak Brownie Box. What he said to me sticks with me to this day: \"Remember, it's not the camera — it's the photographer.\" Fast forward decades through a 25-year career in the courtroom as a criminal court reporter—that often-invisible person taking down the verbatim testimony of witnesses during a trial. After retiring, I went back to my very first passion: looking through the lens and capturing the moving and still life all around me.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>2. How important is it for a photographer to \"connect\" with their subject?\u003C/em>\u003C/strong>\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>I believe the onlooker of my work, or for any piece of art, can tell whether the photographer has connected with his/her work. Is it important? Oh, yes, but that connection, at least in my opinion, is something that is innate to each individual. I can only hope that is conveyed in my photos.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>3. What has been a formative experience or the best advice you\u003C/em>\u003C/strong>’\u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>ve received within your career?\u003C/em>\u003C/strong>\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Keep snapping that shutter. The story acts as motivation for all that comes after whether it’s a fashion shoot or landscape.  For my landscape photography I choose a location that I feel evokes a feeling or mood and I ask myself if it’s an image I would like to hang on my wall. I come up with ideas for locations, colors and over all vibe that I want to create by deciding if I want full sun or a cloudy moody day, sunrise or sunset. I also allow inspiration to strike while on location. This is all part of preparation for the photoshoot.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The below image was taken in Maui. I wanted to capture the vibe and culture of the Hawaiian people. Work with what you have, but there are some basics. A wide angle lens, I use a Nikon 16-35 mm and a lens that will get you closer to the subject as well, like a 50 mm or higher and a tripod. A tripod will help get straight angles as well as avoid camera shake and give you the opportunity to shoot with a long exposure. A good camera bag is great as well, if you are walking a long distance or hiking I suggest a backpack camera bag, one that you can strap your tripod to as well. If I’m traveling away from home I like to have my laptop with me so I can import all of my photos from the day and If I have time I start the retouching process in Lightroom. I will also walk or drive around exploring new places that I find interesting enough to shoot. It’s important to get outside of your comfort zone and explore!\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>I create a shot list in a word document before each trip that I print, it’s just easier for me to have a hard copy on me, especially if I’m doing a lot of driving. The shot list has a day to day list so that I can keep on track and make sure I shoot everything I had planned. I list the day, time I want to shoot the location and address as well as what the significant landmark is, a tree or rock formation, etc. I will also note how I want to shoot it, sunrise, bright day light, overcast for a moody look or sunset to create interesting shadows. There are so many variables but it comes down to the look and feeling you want to evoke.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Once you have your images retouched it’s time to share them with the world!  Get a professional website like Square Space or if you plan on selling them I would suggest Shopify. But consider this: the right mounting materials can help you safely display and even preserve your art for the next generation and beyond.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is Mount Board?\u003C/h2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Mount board. Mounting board. Backing board. Foamboard. Foamcore.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Those are a lot of aliases to keep up with! They all mean essentially the same thing. For the purposes of this article, we’ll stick with “mount board.”\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is Mount Board Used For?\u003C/h2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Mount board is used to support and protect framed artwork by providing a rigid, sturdy backing that keeps photos and art from moving or warping in the frame. With some exceptions for special conservation mounting and float mounting, mount board is almost always the actual \u003Cem>back\u003C/em> of the frame. \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>(As opposed to mat board, which sits on \u003Cem>top \u003C/em>of the artwork and features a mat window opening to display the artwork beneath it. See \u003Ca href=\"https://www.framedestination.com/blog/mount-board/matboard-mount-board-foam-core-differences\">this article\u003C/a> for details on the differences between mount board and mat board.) An integral part of the picture-framing process, mount board is also used for presentations and other display purposes. \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Are Mount Boards Made of?\u003C/h2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>A mount board is generally made of foam — often polystyrene — with a smooth, sometimes paper-based face on either side. Most mount board is offered in white, but Frame Destination also carries black mount board for a sleek look. However, cheap off-the-shelf frames will use cardboard or even poster board instead of mount board.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mount Board Sizes\u003C/h2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Mount board is most commonly available in 3/16” or 1/8” thicknesses. Though Frame Destination offers both at the same price, we often recommend the 3/16” board unless the picture frame’s rabbet can’t accommodate it. (The rabbet is the recessed area within a frame which cradles the mount board, mat board, and glazing.) A 3/16” mount board is also less likely to warp, lending additional stability for larger frames.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>If you sell your matted artwork in art shows, you may prefer 1/8” mount board. Because they take up less space, 1/8” mount boards fit more art into display bins and are easier to transport to and from shows.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Archival vs. Non-Archival Mount Board\u003C/h2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Some mount board is considered “archival” or “conservation quality” — meaning it helps prevent the artwork from degrading. If you want to preserve valuable art and photographs, the best option is archival \u003Cstrong>acid-free mount board\u003C/strong> because it actively protects against airborne pollutants and reduces the chance of yellowing and fading. \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>If you are \u003Cem>not\u003C/em> concerned with preserving your work and just need a temporary framing solution, presentation, or craft option, you may wish to choose the more cost-effective, non-archival regular mount board which comes in a \u003Ca href=\"https://www.framedestination.com/prod/sh/regular-foam-1-8.html\">\u003Cstrong>1/8” thickness\u003C/strong>\u003C/a> or a slightly thicker \u003Ca href=\"https://www.framedestination.com/prod/sh/regular-foam-3-16.html\">\u003Cstrong>3/16” version\u003C/strong>\u003C/a>\u003Cstrong>.\u003C/strong>\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Highlights of Our Collection\u003C/h3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Frame Destination has an ample selection of mount board, including archival (acid-free) and non-archival (regular) boards.
