Unlike architecture, it’s more about intuition than precision.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Her Happy Place\u003C/strong>\u003C/h3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Julie says abstract painting lets her loosen up and relax. On her website, she talks about painting intuitively, with no preconceived notions about the result. This new activity, which has turned into a small business, also positively affects her mood. “I love using bright, happy colors that express the joy and delight I’ve found in painting,” she says.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Born and raised in New Orleans, she is influenced by the architecture, music, and food of the Crescent City. What is your background; how did you get started?\u003C/em>\u003C/strong>\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>After my husband passed away 10 years ago, I decided that I wanted to start painting. As an architect, I was always creative, but I hoped that pursuing art would be therapeutic. Not only was it therapeutic, but it opened up a whole new world for me! It wasn't long before painting became my passion and a new small business.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>2\u003C/strong>\u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>. What role do you think the artist plays in society?\u003C/em>\u003C/strong>\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>To create visual enjoyment for others and to satisfy a deep expressive need within ourselves.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>3. I found out that the benefactor of the school, an experienced collector, bought my piece! It opened many doors for me and I am eternally grateful for that experience. Best advice was to never criticize your own work; just keep going and paint over it.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>4. In what ways does your work reflect your personality?\u003C/em>\u003C/strong>\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>I use a lot of color and I always wonder if I use bright colors to make me happy, or am I happy so I paint in bright colors? If so, how do you overcome them?\u003C/em>\u003C/strong>\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>I keep photos and Pinterest boards of work I like. Does becoming an art collector mean I have to buy expensive, large pieces of art?\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hand Pulled Prints to the Rescue\u003C/h2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>I may not be able to afford large works with high price tags but I realized there is an art form out there I can afford. Printmaking! I am not talking about computer reproductions or giclee prints. I am talking about etchings, engravings, linoleum and wood cuts, mono prints and more. In some cases it requires an etching press. \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>There are many different forms of traditional printmaking. It is exciting because there are so many fabulous contemporary printmakers producing hand-pulled prints and the price point is affordable! I started collecting and I am hooked!\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is a Solar Etching?\u003C/h2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In college I took printmaking and learned all the different processes and enjoyed creating limited editions. The draw backs for me were the acids and chemicals involved in printmaking. They can be toxic and harmful to both the artist and the environment.  I stopped working as a printmaker because of this. \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In 2017 I discovered a form of etching I fell in love with! It is called Solar Etching or Photo Gravure. This modern day technique for printmakers allows the artist to blend current technology with traditional techniques. An artist creates the image in whatever media/technique they like. The original (which can be sold as a One of a Kind) is  scanned into an editing program. I use Adobe Photoshop. I convert my image to greyscale and then work with polymer plates which have a light sensitive coating. \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The image is transferred to the plate, exposed to UV light, and then washed. The areas where there are tonal values become “indented or etched” into the plate and become ready for inking. Each plate can produce anywhere from 20-50 images before the plate is no longer viable. Each one is hand inked and hand-pulled by the printmaker, creating a limited edition. Afterwards the artist can opt to leave the print as a single color (monochromatic) or it can be hand tinted with multiple colors. I love hand tinting my etchings for an even more incredible bonus! Each one is made by me and is unique….. and affordable! Win! When it gets to me I have the task of framing it. This can be daunting for people with no framing experience. I have been framing my original art as well as my limited edition etchings for years. In this article I’ll share some easy, basic steps to help your art last longer while on display within a frame. \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cem>NOTE\u003C/em>: If your artwork is very valuable or needs to last for generations, it’s best to seek guidance from a professional framer specifically trained in conservation framing. Keep in mind that it’s impossible to permanently preserve or archive a print. Hundreds of years, yes. But even full-on museum-grade framing won’t protect art forever.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Glove up\u003C/h3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Professional and hobby photographers go out of their way to protect their negatives, photos, and prints from fingerprints. Their product of choice is often \u003Ca href=\"https://www.framedestination.com/prod/s/lineco-cotton-darkroom-gloves.html\">Lineco Cotton Darkroom Gloves\u003C/a>. Art framers and conservators also use these lint-free, dust-free gloves to keep harmful oils from touching art and documents during handling and framing. If these gloves are good enough for the professionals, be assured that they’ll serve you well, too.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Choose the Proper Mount Board\u003C/h3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>You probably know that acid can be a major source of damage to art. An important step in archival framing is selecting framing components that are not just acid free, but also lignin free. Standard mat boards and \u003Ca href=\"https://www.framedestination.com/blog/mount-board/what-is-mount-board-and-how-to-use-it\">mounting boards\u003C/a> are made of wood pulp paper, which contains acid. Lignin is a binding agent that holds wood together, forming acid as it degrades. So, make sure you use mat board made of \u003Ca href=\"https://www.framedestination.com/info/matboard-selection.html#alphacell\">alpha-cellulose\u003C/a> or \u003Ca href=\"https://www.framedestination.com/info/matboard-selection.html#cotton\">cotton rag\u003C/a> rather than paper.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Use Proper Mounting Board, Not Cardboard\u003C/h3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>When mounting your artwork, resist the urge to use cardboard even if you have a readily available stack of it in your office closet. Cardboard is full of acidic compounds. Instead, use a \u003Ca href=\"https://www.framedestination.com/prod/sh/acid-free-3-16-foam-board.html\">quality acid-free foam board\u003C/a>. Part of Encore's Masterpiece collection, this mounting board is thick, lightweight, acid-free, and neutralizes external pollutants — perfect for the archival preservation of valuable art and photographs. It comes in two thicknesses: 3/16” and 1/8”. (By the way, mounting board, backing board, mount board, foam board, and foam core all refer to the same thing.)\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Select the Proper Glazing\u003C/h3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Regular \u003Ca href=\"https://www.framedestination.com/blog/glazing/glass-vs-acrylic-for-photography-framing\">glass or acrylic\u003C/a> will safeguard your art from prying fingers and detrimental components in the air, while also somewhat protecting against humidity. (High humidity areas may require an additional moisture barrier inside the frame.) Although plain glass and acrylic will block about half of the harmful UV rays, consider \u003Ca href=\"https://www.framedestination.com/prod/sh/tru-vue-conservation-clear-glass.html\">UV filter glass\u003C/a> or acrylic, which can block at least 98% of the UV radiation. This is a good choice if you’re concerned about longevity or if the artwork will be displayed in a room with some direct sunlight. \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Mount Your Art Correctly\u003C/h3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>If you are not using a mat, mounting is simple. Assuming the print is the same size as the inside of the frame, you just slide the art behind the glass or acrylic. The glass, mounting board, and frame will hold the art in place. \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>If you are using a mat, do not tape the sides of the print to the mat or mounting board. The mat, mounting board, and artwork will all expand and contract at different rates as the temperature changes. If you tape the artwork down, this expansion and contraction will soon cause the artwork to buckle. Instead, use archival quality \u003Ca href=\"https://www.framedestination.com/prod/c/self-adhesive-linen-hinging-tape.html\">hinging tape\u003C/a> or \u003Ca href=\"https://www.framedestination.com/prod/c/self-adhesive-hinging-tissue.html\">hinging tissue\u003C/a> to secure the print to the back of the mat at just a couple of points. \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>If the print is wider than 24 inches, you might use three points of tape. This leaves the print mostly loose inside the frame package so it can expand and contract without binding. Protect the Back Side\u003C/h3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Ca href=\"https://www.framedestination.com/prod/c/frame-backing-paper-acid-free.html\">Lineco’s Light Gray Acid-Free Frame Backing Paper\u003C/a> adds archival value to your framed artwork. Unlike everyday brown or black kraft paper that punctures easily, this backing paper is acid-free and buffered with 3% calcium carbonate to help protect your art. Moderate porosity allows the frame package to breathe, and the standard weight makes it easy to cut and handle. You can adhere this acid-free backing paper to the frame with our \u003Ca href=\"https://www.framedestination.com/ctg/framing-supplies/photo-mounting-supplies/atg-tape.html\">ATG tape\u003C/a> or \u003Ca href=\"https://www.framedestination.com/ctg/framing-supplies/photo-mounting-supplies/adhesives-glue.html\">liquid adhesives\u003C/a>.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7. Hang It Up!\u003C/h3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The final step is to hang your artwork. Use a professional hanging kit specific to your type of frame and install it according to the directions. Try to avoid direct sunlight. Even if you use UV filter glass or acrylic, direct sunlight will eventually degrade the art. I think that many would argue that sunsets should usually be rendered in color to capture that special moment, but that’s not always the case, at least not for me. While in the field I recognized the desired subject, contrast, the light and shadows needed to render a dynamic piece in black and white. Yes, there are rare times that after pressing that button I don’t see what “I saw” …and that tells me that at the moment of “click” I missed something and the end result didn’t match my creative mind. Those occasions are a disappointment, but you do learn from it and that is \u003Cem>always \u003C/em>one of the coolest things of creating in photography. It is rewarding to figure out what was missing on the images that didn’t make the cut; Was it a poor choice of subject? Was it misjudging the light, the shadows, the contrast, or all the above? Or did I simply see something different in my mind’s eye that my real eyes just didn’t capture? We look at B&W images taken 50 or more years ago, and they still work…\u003Cem>and they work well.\u003C/em> In today’s glut of social media color images pouring out of iPhones and such, most of those color images don’t stay in your mind but for a few minutes if that.  Of course, there are photographers doing great work in color, but I believe its just harder than ever for even very good color work to stand out in the current sea of color images easily found online, etc. To me, social media has created just as much harm to photography as it has provided incredible viewership.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In my gallery I will often hear one speak of how they love black and white art. What role do you think the artist plays in society?\u003C/em>\u003C/strong>\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>I believe that artists help us to see possibilities, to see the world creatively and differently. It’s especially important for children’s developing minds to learn to think in new ways. What has been a formative experience or the best advice you\u003C/em>\u003C/strong>’\u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>ve received within your career?\u003C/em>\u003C/strong>\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The most informative experience for me was being selected as one of the artists to paint for the film \u003Ca href=\"http://lovingvincent.com\">“Loving Vincent”\u003C/a> in 2016. It was nominated for an Academy Award in 2018. I realized that even at the age of 54, I could learn new skills and accomplish something so unique. If I hadn’t taken the risk to go to Gdansk, Poland, it never would have happened. It opened many doors for me and I am eternally grateful for that experience!\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>4. In what ways does your work reflect your personality?\u003C/em>\u003C/strong>\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>My work reflects my love of nature and color. I consider myself to be very intuitive and above all, human. That’s why I like seeing “humanity” in paintings. And why I’m not a fan of photo realism. \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>5. Creative blocks, do you get them? If so, how do you overcome them?\u003C/em>\u003C/strong>\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>I think everyone gets them! It’s all a part of the creative process. For me, it’s usually because I am putting too much pressure on myself to “perform.” The best way to overcome it, for me, has been to take on an attitude of play and experimentation in my studio, without expectations for certain results. Trying new mediums helps, too. And it’s okay to just take a break sometimes!\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>6. What is your most indispensable tool? (Not counting the obvious, like paints, brushes, canvas, camera, etc.)\u003C/em>\u003C/strong>\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>My most indispensable tools have to be my art books. I enjoy looking at the work of other artists who inspire me. And it’s not about copying them. It’s about seeing work that takes risks that I’ve been afraid to take, or handles artistic problems in new ways. Also, going to art museums! Seeing work in person is very important to me.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>7. Do you have a new project you are working on, or a new passionate idea?\u003C/em>\u003C/strong>\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>My new goal in my studio these days is to take nature and make it more abstracted and expressive. I was trained in a very representational way. Nothing wrong with this, but I am looking for something more in my work these past few years. In what ways does your work reflect your personality?\u003C/em>\u003C/strong>\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>I like to travel and I like to design. Being a more dedicated photographer has provided me with the opportunity to more carefully design the activities undertaken at each destination, which ensures we get the best out of each visit and also makes room for leisure and relaxation. When I was an environmental engineer, I designed control systems that help industrial facilities clean the water we drink and protect the environment from improperly treated wastewater (sewage). I’ve found that many engineers and hunters turn to photography — environmental engineers probably more so — as we continually look at our landscapes. \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>5. Creative blocks, do you get them? If so, how do you overcome them?\u003C/em>\u003C/strong>\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Creative blocks occur all the time. I plant my feet at a scene, convinced that I have chosen the best location and that I would “lose the shot” if I moved. This is both true and false at the same time. I try to adopt the perspective that I am losing multiple opportunities by staying put, instead of losing just one opportunity by moving. That’s how I persuade myself to move, seek alternatives, and break the creative block.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>6. What is your most indispensable tool? (Not counting the obvious, like paints, brushes, canvas, camera, etc.)\u003C/em>\u003C/strong>\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Adobe Creative Cloud apps are my most valuable tool.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>7.
