I relocated to the U.S., introverted and without a clear direction, attending art schools to fill the gap I felt inside me. When I turned to painting in my early 20s, I had already earned a college degree in business administration, but I lacked big aspirations or plans for myself. I couldn’t imagine working in an office, performing tasks, and crunching numbers. I had a different calling. I took some art classes at a local community college for the fun of it. My immediate goal was to learn realistic drawing. Because classical art education was almost nonexistent 25 years ago, I spent years learning the craft by going to various art schools. A few years later, I turned inward, painting stories rather than objects. I began painting stories in portraits and figures to process my emotions. A lot of my art reflected my search for “self” and my lack of belonging. I spent years in an internal search for validation or reasons to live, finding it hard to connect to anyone or anything that would give my life meaning. I had a few breaking points that changed my understanding of reality. It’s vital to find the unique connection to yourself to arrive at a deep state of peace and balance. I want to bring feelings of joy, peace, and inspiration to your heart. Through my art, I wish to create a more loving world without violence, judgment, and fear.      \u003Cbr>                                                                                       \u003C/li>\n\n\n\n\u003Cli>\u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>What role do you think the artist plays in society?\u003C/em>\u003C/strong>\u003Cbr>Why do we always look back at human history in terms of art? Early excavations, Renaissance masters, modern art, and so on. It’s because art isn’t created in a void. It reflects, comments on, and juxtaposes various points of view mixed with emotion. Art is the depiction of feelings we often hide, suppress, or don’t even think about unless we encounter art. It’s also a tool to express political and economic glory. Art is a visual language that’s often taken for granted because it’s all around us. But if we removed every picture, poster, cover, book, and song just for one day, we would experience a profound lack of beauty, thought, and inspiration.\u003Cbr> \u003C/li>\n\n\n\n\u003Cli>\u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>What has been a formative experience or the best advice you’ve received within your career?\u003C/em>\u003C/strong>\u003Cbr>I've been working as a professional artist for over two decades and one central lesson that I've learned is this: To bring in consistent business, you must be socially engaging with as many relevant people as possible to generate interest in your art, your personality, and your offerings.\u003Cbr> \u003C/li>\n\n\n\n\u003Cli>\u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>In what ways does your work reflect your personality?\u003C/em>\u003C/strong>\u003Cbr>I’ve always painted what I wanted. So, my art is a direct reflection of my thoughts and emotion expressed in color, symbols, and figures. I paint visual stories and concepts that interest me — like the idea of being at a crossroads of body, mind, and spirit. I'm curious about the depiction of the secrets of the universe and how it all coexists and functions.\u003Cbr> \u003C/li>\n\n\n\n\u003Cli>\u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>Creative blocks, do you get them? If so, how do you overcome them?\u003C/em>\u003C/strong>\u003Cbr>Yes, I do get the blocks sometimes. To overcome one, I try to understand the reason I’m having the creative block, because they're all different. Some of them happen because of complete burnout doing something that doesn't work. So, I try to relax and reflect on my failures; then I can learn from them and pivot if needed. Other times, the block happens because of a deadline. If that's the case, I break down a big task into smaller ones and make myself do small tasks daily. Finally, there could be a creative block because all my ideas are seemingly gone. There's no interest or satisfaction with the work. I don't like anything and I see no reason to continue doing it. When this is the case, I take a break and do something else creative, like looking at other artists’ work, reading, or even walking. Over time, these activities rebalance me and I feel inspired to create again.\u003Cbr>           \u003C/li>\n\n\n\n\u003Cli>\u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>What is your most indispensable tool? (Not counting the obvious, like paints, brushes, canvas, camera, etc.)\u003C/em>\u003C/strong>\u003Cbr>I must have my large monitor in my studio. It's by HP and it’s 27 inches long! It allows me to see lots of detail and color shifts that are impossible to gather looking at a large photo. My Nikon D500 is a useful tool because I do figurative art painting from my own pictures for the most part. But ultimately, my imagination is the most valuable tool; without it, creating is impossible.\u003Cbr> \u003C/li>\n\n\n\n\u003Cli>\u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>Do you have a new project you are working on, or a new passionate idea?\u003C/em>\u003C/strong>\u003Cbr>I want to establish and run an annual art contest for talented high school students. But then the Louisa, Virginia, artist used that feedback as fuel, finding a way to differentiate her art and raise it to a new level. \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Finding the Essence\u003C/h3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Alison bravely faced the truth that her nature photography didn’t stand out. And so she began to digitally manipulate her photographs, giving them a more ethereal quality. Now, her goal is to reveal the essence of a scene rather than an exact recording. “Fog on the Lake” (shown above) is a beautiful example, as is “Blue Fog” below. \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Format is another way Alison’s work is distinct. Her vertical panoramas appeal to customers looking for art that fits nicely into tricky spaces, like an entryway or beside a china cabinet in the dining room. What is your background; how did you get started?\u003C/em>\u003C/strong>\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>When I was 19, I found the camera that my older sister had left behind when she went away to college. It was old and not very fancy, but it had an adjustable f-stop and shutter speed. Around that same time, I received an ad for the Time Life series on photography. I got the first book, a roll of Tri-X film, took the camera out, and learned how to use it. Because of a troubled childhood, nature was an important part of my life; I found peace and solitude in the woods across the street. As I started photographing nature, I began developing my own black-and-white photographs and even had a few exhibits in local libraries. Life, however, got in the way: I got married, took a real job, and had a daughter. The camera was untouched for many years until I went on a trip with friends to Assateague, Virginia, and realized how much I missed taking photographs. I bought a new camera, and a few years later, my husband and I moved to Florida, where I discovered art festivals. At first, I showed straight photographs and then panoramas, and with my first copy of Photoshop, I moved into digital manipulation.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>2. What role do you think the artist plays in society?\u003C/em>\u003C/strong>\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>There are many roles that artists play in society. There is art to bring voice to issues in the world. There is art to make us smile and laugh. My purpose is to bring beauty and serenity into the world.   \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>3. What has been a formative experience or the best advice you've received within your career?\u003C/em>\u003C/strong>\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Twice, people have given me advice that initially upset me but then positively impacted my career. The first time happened when I was considering entering art festivals. Some friends suggested I attend a festival on Sunday morning before the show opened, when artists may be open to answering my questions. While looking at the artists' tents and walls, I figured I could start cheaply. I asked an artist about getting an EZ-Up tent. In a booming voice, the man told me, \"If you're going to do it, do it right! Get the good tent. Get the good walls.\" And so I did. While it poured rain during my first art festival, I thought, \"I can't quit now. I have too much money invested.\" If I had bought that EZ-Up, I'd have bailed right then and there. The second instance was even more critical. I complained to a group of art festival friends about not selling much at a recent show, and someone said, \"That's because your work looks like everyone else's.\" I was upset for a few days until I started looking at others' work — that friend was right. So, I started doing the digital manipulation to create a more unique look.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>4. In what ways does your work reflect your personality?\u003C/em>\u003C/strong>\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>As a young child, going into the woods gave me calm and peace. It still does. I found my photographs improved greatly when I moved from Florida back to my home state of Virginia; I connect more with Virginia scenes since they were what I grew up admiring.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>5. Creative blocks, do you get them? If so, how do you overcome them?\u003C/em>\u003C/strong>\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Sometimes, I return from a photo trip and can't find anything that works. I planned an image to crop a certain way, but now it doesn't work. So, I put the photos away for a month or so. Then I can look at them with fresh eyes because I've forgotten the plan and see something totally different.  \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>6. What is your most indispensable tool? (Not counting the obvious, like paints, brushes, canvas, camera, etc.) \u003C/em>\u003C/strong>\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>My eyes, my mind. The photographs are just raw material for my creations.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>7. Do you have a new project you are working on, or a new passionate idea?\u003C/em>\u003C/strong>\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>This year, I am retiring from art festivals. So, I am learning the ins and outs of selling online. Simple or grand, your surroundings may have included rugged furnishings, thick plaid blankets, wood-paneled or log walls, a stone fireplace crackling with flames, and glorious views of nature just outside the door. Some of us fall so in love with this ambiance that we want to recreate it at home. That's what Lodge Decor is all about.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Where Did Lodge Decor Originate?\u003C/strong>\u003C/h3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Log cabins came to North America by way of Swedish settlers in the 1600s. The construction involved no nails and consisted of just one room measuring 10 feet wide by 12 to 20 feet long. There was one window and a loft for sleeping. From the late 1800s through the early 1900s, America's pioneers built similar structures, stacking notched logs cut from timber they chopped down. Believe it or not, these log cabins were sturdy and even rainproof. For example, you may prefer simple, neutral bedding paired with a thick cream wool rug. The pop of pattern can come from a camp-style blanket draped across the end of the bed. A deep-green velvet headboard can provide a burst of color. Of course, if you want to go all-in with plaid or a modern Aztec pattern, choose one significant element: the bedding or the rug. If wood dressers and nightstands lend to a cohesive appearance, great. But if you feel they add too much wood, paint them a light color. The same goes for the walls; painting them a soft shade lets you keep a tranquil feel without being overly woodsy. From 2017 - 2018, I trained with Gretchen Halpert via her \u003Ca href=\"https://www.gretchenhalpert.com/SIDP.html\">Scientific Illustration Distance Program\u003C/a> and became fascinated at how art can be used to depict aspects of the natural world. It was during this program that I started dipping my toe into the digital art world by editing my hand-drawn illustrations for class in Photoshop. In 2020, I began seriously studying Illustrator and Photoshop, which I used to create all of the images for my solo show at the Black Mountain Center for the Arts called \"Night Creatures of Rainbow Mountain”.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>A \u003Cstrong>Brief History of Digital Illustration as an Art Medium\u003C/strong>\u003C/strong>\u003C/h3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Digital illustration uses computer technology to craft artworks from scratch — as opposed to scanned art or digital photos. Rather than using pencil, ink, or paint on paper or canvas, the artist uses a variety of tools like a mouse, stylus, or other digital devices. The artist may use applications such as Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop. Of course, early innovators of the medium used much less sophisticated methods. He returned to his roots in digital art. His teaching and research activities have contributed immensely to the areas of computer graphics, digital media, computer art, design of interactive systems, computational semiotics, and more.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Other early adopters of this new art form were \u003Cstrong>Susan Kare\u003C/strong>, best known for her work creating pixel art and icons for maiden Apple Macintosh computers in the early 1980s. To wit: She came up with user interface illustrations such as the “happy” and “sad” Mac icons, the trash can, and the bomb symbol. Even \u003Cstrong>Andy Warhol \u003C/strong>was among the cutting-edge digital illustrators of his day, innovating digital art for computer company Commodore International, for which Warhol was a “brand ambassador.” You can view his digital art at the \u003Ca href=\"https://www.warhol.org/exhibition/warhol-and-the-amiga/\">Andy Warhol Museum\u003C/a> in Pittsburgh. Another noteworthy digital groundbreaker was \u003Cstrong>Sylvia Harris\u003C/strong>, who used her design talents to impact public health. A Black woman who grew up during the Civil Rights movement, she helped redesign the 2000 census to increase participation from people groups that had been underrepresented and enhanced hospital signage to help new patients find their way around quickly. \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cdiv aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\">\u003C/div>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Today’s Digital Artists\u003C/strong>\u003C/h3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Now that technology has caught up with our collective imagination, digital art is pervasive across the globe. We set up game cameras around our home on Rainbow Mountain in Montreat, North Carolina, just to capture images of the various animals roaming our property from dusk to dawn. From these photographs, I created\u003Cstrong> “Night Creatures of Rainbow Mountain\u003C/strong>” — a series of 30 digital illustrations depicting 16 wild animals within their natural environment, along with a corresponding portrait rendered in greater detail. \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>The Why: \u003C/em>\u003C/strong>My goals were to raise awareness about the animals living in Montreat, educate the public about the key roles these animals play in a cove-forest ecosystem, and inspire a sense of wonder at the beauty and diversity of our Appalachian wildlife. \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>The What: \u003C/em>\u003C/strong>I wanted to accomplish these goals through an art show where some of the proceeds would benefit \u003Ca href=\"https://www.appalachianwild.org\">Appalachian Wildlife Refuge\u003C/a>. As a professional artist, I planned to benefit financially as well, and crunched numbers on how best to make a profit while making my work accessible. \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>The Call: \u003C/em>\u003C/strong>When Black Mountain Center for the Arts issued a call for submissions, I’d already laid some groundwork. I’d attended their shows, taken a few classes, and participated in two group exhibits. With a relationship built, I felt confident approaching the gallery with my “Night Creatures of Rainbow Mountain” work, knowing it would strike a chord with our nature-conscious community. And so I submitted my \u003Ca href=\"https://www.framedestination.com/blog/resources/how-to-write-an-artist-statement\">artist statement\u003C/a>, my \u003Ca href=\"https://www.framedestination.com/blog/resources/writing-artist-biography-vs-statement-why-you-need-both\">artist biography\u003C/a>, and a PDF discussing “The Why” and “The What.” The PDF included the images, their sizes, and how I would frame them. I did not suggest pricing because I wanted to discuss that with the gallery if my work was accepted. Fortunately, the gallery’s board of directors chose my work. I asked myself, “How do I share this ‘wild’ story in a systemized, yet interesting, way?” Then I came up with groupings and titles that hint at each animal’s role and personality. For example, the Luna Moth in the featured image (top of article) begged for the title \u003Cstrong>“Night Dreamers.”\u003C/strong> A large, brightly colored insect found in broadleaf forests, Luna Moths are named after Luna, the Roman moon goddess. Their extremely sensitive front paws have specialized hairs that identify objects by touch.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>~ \u003Cstrong>“Night Tricksters”\u003C/strong> comprise two types of foxes. The American Red Fox is a playful creature who can run up to 30 mph while evading predators. After conducting an informal Facebook survey, I chose 10 images with the highest votes. I matted these prints using cheaper, non-archival materials for cost-conscious individuals. \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Now let’s look at the medium that inspired all this work!\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cdiv aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\">\u003C/div>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Digital Illustration at a Glance\u003C/strong>\u003C/h3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Digital illustration uses computer technology to craft artworks from scratch — as opposed to scanned art or digital photos. Rather than using pencil, ink, or paint on paper or canvas, the artist uses a variety of tools like a mouse, stylus, or other digital devices.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Mathematician and computer scientist \u003Cstrong>Frieder Nake \u003C/strong>was one of the world’s first digital artists. He used a finely tuned drawing machine to create over 300 “aesthetic drawings” in the 1960s. Another early adopter of this new art form was \u003Cstrong>Susan Kare\u003C/strong>, best known for creating pixel art and icons for maiden Apple Macintosh computers in the early 1980s.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Now that technology has caught up with our collective imagination, digital art is pervasive across the globe. Today’s top digital artists include \u003Cstrong>Mike Winkelmann, aka “Beeple,”\u003C/strong> famous for selling a portion of his works for $98 million. As an anchor piece, consider a velvet loveseat or sectional in burnt orange or emerald green — or go softer with cream or gray. Don’t be afraid to pile up the colorful, heavily patterned throw pillows. Since this decor style is unconventional, the seating can be, too: like a papasan chair or a rattan swinging chair if you’re feeling spicy. Plush cushions for floor seating can be stored in a wicker basket in the corner. The rug? Colorful Moroccan or simple sisal will do; feel free to layer. Other furnishings could include a simple, natural wood coffee table, preferably distressed; a bookshelf laden with novels, poetry, and travel guides; and a patina copper side table. He enjoyed what I was creating and said I could easily continue the path I was on, selling to a specialty store as a product. Or I could take it further, presenting as an artist, happy simply to show the work, even if it was at a gas station and I sold nothing. I chose the latter, and I am so much happier with what I’m creating and what I've sold. I would still be thrilled to show in a gas station if asked. I love bold color and am so thrilled to reflect that. I also like it when my work inspires both delight and a softer gaze in the viewer. I believe everyone could benefit from a softer gaze.\u003Cbr> \u003C/li>\n\n\n\n\u003Cli>\u003Cstrong>Creative blocks, do you get them? If so, how do you overcome them?\u003C/strong>\u003Cbr>If stuck or unsure, I just try something. I can always adjust or undo it but it usually works itself out in the process.\u003Cbr>           \u003C/li>\n\n\n\n\u003Cli>\u003Cstrong>What is your most indispensable tool? (Not counting the obvious, like paints, brushes, canvas, camera, etc.)\u003C/strong>\u003Cbr>Needle-tipped pliers, not that I don't use my fingers and they aren't seriously callused.\u003Cbr> \u003C/li>\n\n\n\n\u003Cli>\u003Cstrong>Do you have a new project you are working on, or a new passionate idea?\u003C/strong>\u003Cbr>I am currently working on the largest piece I've ever attempted.
