Metal frames are commonly available in black, white and shades of silver or gray; the new \u003Ca href=\"https://www.framedestination.com/prod/frame/nielsen-profile-117v.html\">Nielsen Profile 117V\u003C/a> has since introduced bright red, blue, purple, green and turquoise to metal frames.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The color of the picture frame depends again on the artwork and the room. Contrasting a light picture with a dark frame can create a nice visual effect, such as a black and white photo inside a black metal frame. However, dark frames may draw attention away from works featuring light colors, such as watercolors. To ensure you choose the right color, you can \u003Ca href=\"https://www.framedestination.com/ctg/custom-frames/frame-moulding-samples.html\">order sample mouldings\u003C/a> of all Frame Destination frames, including straight sides and corners.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Choose Whether You Want a Mat Board\u003C/h2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>You may choose to include a mat board in your picture frame to further enhance the look. In fact, when using a high quality mat board, it is possible to protect your picture or artwork from being discolored by the acidic properties of a wood frame or from external factors, including the wall the frame is being hung on. The mat creates a buffered border that prevents acid from destroying what you are trying to protect.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Frame Destination carries three types of mat boards to give you the desired color, price and properties for your framing project. Each of these mat boards has specific properties that make them more desirable. Take a look at each one before making a decision about which is right for you and your next custom picture framing project. \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. \u003Cspan>Rag Mat Board\u003C/span>\u003C/h2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The highest quality mat board you can purchase is made from cotton. It is typical for any mat boards made from cotton to be called ‘rag.’ It is the same term used when talking about paper documents or even the paper used for making money. Rag is extremely durable and will stand the test of time by blocking all acid from getting to the picture.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The board consists of separate plies of rag board, all dyed to the color you choose. The colors available are somewhat limited and the pricing is higher than any other mat board, but it is a fair tradeoff to have the kind of mat board used in the finest museums. All rag mat boards are considered conservation quality and will best protect your framed art or photos.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>These mats can consist of 4, 6 and 8 plies, making a thickness that ranges from 1/16 inch to 1/8 inch. Frame Destination carries rag mat board from Bainbridge (AlphaRag) and Crescent (RagMat). \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. \u003Cspan>AlphaMat Mat Board\u003C/span>\u003C/h2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Museums also sometimes use the \u003Ca href=\"https://www.framedestination.com/prod/mat/bainbridge-4ply-alphamat.html\">AlphaMat mat board\u003C/a> because it consists of cellulose perfect for archival framing. Cellulose is a less expensive mat board than rag but has all of the same beneficial properties. In addition, cellulose can provide more color options for inside your frame.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>When looking at cellulose mat boards, you will notice they are described as 4-ply. Keep in mind this does not indicate there are four layers of mat board. Instead, it indicates the approximate thickness of the mat board. There are no choices in thickness for this type of mat board – the depth of these mats at Frame Destination is 1/16 inch – but it is still a museum quality board that will endure for as long as you need it.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. \u003Cspan>Papermat Mat Board\u003C/span>\u003C/h2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Paper mat boards are the least expensive of all the mat boards, but they also do the least to protect your pictures over time. These boards are treated with calcium carbonate to neutralize the acidity of the wood pulp used to make the mat. The problem is that this buffer will deteriorate over time, and the acidity of the wood in the paper mat will eventually damage the picture. These mat boards are recommended for temporary framing and should only be used for a period of up to five years.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Papermat comes in a variety of colors – from bright and bold, to subdued and neutral – making it a good choice for home décor (as long as it’s changed according to the commendations). Choose the right hanging fixtures for your picture.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>2. Find the right spot – before you hammer or drill.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>3. Fasten brackets and hangers to a stud if needed.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>4. Level your picture.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cdiv aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\">\u003C/div>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Step 1. Choose the Right Picturing Hanging Fixtures\u003C/strong>\u003C/h3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Choose good, quality fixtures to hang your frames with — and pay especially close attention to the weight limit. Most hanging kits or hooks come with a breakdown of the weight you can safely hang from the hooks. Do not go over this weight. You might not think a pound or two will not make that much of a difference, but it can. Also remember that there's nothing wrong with using a stronger bracket than you need.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Small Lightweight Pictures\u003C/strong> \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>If you have a relatively small and lightweight picture, it may have a saw tooth hanger on the back or you may choose to add one. You can use a saw tooth hanger on a wood or metal picture frame that is less than 12 inches at its longest side. There are different \u003Ca href=\"https://www.framedestination.com/prod/s/saw-tooth-hanging-kit-for-wood-picture-frame.html\">saw tooth hangers for wood\u003C/a> vs. \u003Ca href=\"https://www.framedestination.com/prod/s/saw-tooth-hanging-kit-for-metal-picture-frame.html\">for metal\u003C/a>, so be sure to check that you have the right version before attaching it to the frame. For that type of hanger generally a standard nail (or two next to each other) in the wall will be sufficient to secure the picture. \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Standard Pictures\u003C/strong>\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>For any other standard sized picture and those with hanging wire attached, j-hook picture hangers work best. You can find these in a standard picture \u003Ca href=\"https://www.framedestination.com/prod/s/picture-hanger-206-piece-kit.html\">hanging kit\u003C/a> sold at most frame retailers. These are commonly rated for holding 20-30 lbs. \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Oversized or Heavy Pictures\u003C/strong>\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Some larger j-hooks may be rated for 50 lbs that have two nails, but over 30 lbs it would be better to consider a stud. A wood stud within the wall provides something solid to brace the fastener in. It’s way stronger and more stable than just dry wall or a typical wall panel, and can safely secure your picture frame. To find the stud, thump on the wall and listen for a “solid” sound. (No stud will elicit a “hollow” sound.) For a better shot at success, you can use a stud finder tool available at most hardware retailers.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Step 2. Find the Right Spot\u003C/strong>\u003C/h3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Using the Golden Rule\u003C/strong>\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>There’s a golden rule of hanging a picture that most galleries and museums use and that is to have the center of the photo be at 57 inches. This reflects the standard eye-height of the average person, and most interior decorators will use that as a guide as well. \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Another thing to consider is that you want the pictures in your home or space to be fairly consistent as you move throughout the rooms. So if you have a height that you are generally comfortable with throughout the rest of the space, you can match it. \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Pinpoint the center of your artwork (from top to bottom). Then measure the distance between the center of your picture and the top of the frame. If you are using the golden rule of 57 inches, add the distance you just calculated to 57 inches. \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Then measure that combined height from the floor, and with a pencil or a piece of painters tape, mark that height on the wall where you’d like the picture to hang. \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Typically a saw tooth hanger will be positioned very close to the top of the frame so for that picture you can simply nail in the nail right below that mark. \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>If you have hanging wire on your picture, you’ll need to mark where the actual hanger will be as well as the top of your picture. Hold the wire taut in the middle to form a v-shape. Measure the distance from the top of the v to the top of the frame.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Measure that same distance down from the first mark on your wall and add a second mark or piece of tape. This is where the picture hanger or nail will be attached to the wall.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Using the Picture Place for Accurate Placement Every Time\u003C/strong>\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Using our inexpensive \u003Ca href=\"https://www.framedestination.com/prod/s/picture-hanger-tool-for-gallery-frame-hanging.html\">Picture Hanging Tool\u003C/a>, The Picture Placer, is another easy way to mark the spot to put the picture-hanging hook on your wall.
