The best choice for your photos depends on your needs. Photos that are going to be viewed frequently benefit from being stored in high-quality photo albums. Notes can be inserted in separate pages or sections so they can be viewed along with the photos. If you see a dusty outline of the tape, use an eraser to remove. Note that Paschke recommends that you use a black eraser if you have a dark colored mat board, as a white eraser will leave a white mark.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>You don’t only have to use just one color: you can paint each side a different color, paint dots, or decorate it with other patterns. You can even mimic the artwork inside, painting the mat board bevel in the same color and style to “extend” the artwork to the mat board.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cut-aways and Accent Cuts\u003C/h2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Best used on dark or deeply colored mat boards, according to Master Certified Picture Framer Vivian C. Kistler’s book The Basic Guide to Mat Decoration, cut-aways are exactly that – you simply cut away the surface paper on mat board.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>What You’ll Need: \u003C/strong>\u003Cbr>Dark colored mat board\u003Cbr>Ruler\u003Cbr>Hobby knife\u003Cbr>Stencil or traceable design\u003Cbr>Removable tape\u003Cbr>A soft pencil (e.g. #1, B, 2B, or 3B)\u003Cbr>A hard pencil (e.g. #3, H or 2H)\u003Cbr>Burnishing bone folder\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Step 1\u003C/strong>: \u003Cem>If using a stencil, skip to step 5.\u003C/em> Trace or draw a design on the tracing paper.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Step 2\u003C/strong>: Flip the paper over and, using the soft pencil, coat the back side.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Step 3\u003C/strong>: Flip the paper back over and tape it onto the mat board where you would like the final design.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Step 4\u003C/strong>: Using the hard pencil, trace the design once again. Remove the tracing paper.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Step 5\u003C/strong>: Use the hobby knife to carefully cut only the surface paper – the colored portion – of the mat board along the traced design. If using a stencil, secure it with tape before beginning to cut the mat board.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Step 6\u003C/strong>: Peel the cut-away portion carefully.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Step 7\u003C/strong>: Using a bone folder or other round item, burnish, or smooth, the cut edges.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Kistler recommends practicing using the knife before committing to cutting the mat board. To get a better chance of clean, straight cut, use sharp blades and hold the knife with one finger against the flat side of the blade.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rubber Stamping\u003C/h2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Using paint and your favorite rubber stamp — shapes, animals, plants, and letters — you can create unique designs on your mat board.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>What You’ll Need:\u003C/strong>\u003Cbr>Mat board\u003Cbr>Rubber stamp\u003Cbr>Scrap piece of glass, acrylic, or flat tile\u003Cbr>Acrylic paint, thinned with water if needed\u003Cbr>Paintbrush\u003Cbr>Spray bottle filled with water\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Step 1\u003C/strong>: Map out the stamped design on your mat board. Use pencil to mark the locations.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Step 2\u003C/strong>: Deposit a small amount of the acrylic paint onto the glass, acrylic or tile. Use the paintbrush to spread the paint into a thin, even layer. Test the rubber stamp with the acrylic to make sure it is the right consistency.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Step 3\u003C/strong>: Press the rubber stamp down a few times in the paint to coat it evenly.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Step 4\u003C/strong>: Press the stamp firmly and evenly down once on the mat board.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>You can repeat this process as many times as you want, but be sure to spray the acrylic for the stamp lightly with water to prevent it from drying. Some vintage movie posters – those printed before the mid 1980s – feature a National Screen Service (NSS) number, which represented the year and the order in which the movie was released by the studio. If your poster features this mark, you may have a valuable item on your hands. Be wary, however, as some unscrupulous dealers fake these numbers in order to pass off less valuable posters as the real deal.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>If the poster is folded, do not fold in the opposite direction to keep it flat as this will further weaken the paper. If it is a potentially valuable poster in less-than-mint condition, you may need to take it to a restoration professional. They can apply a linen backing to reinforce and support the poster. Linen backings are commonly found on vintage movie posters and, as the method used is reversible, do not devalue the poster. If you're planning to \u003Ca href=\"https://www.kittl.com/create/posters/movie\">create a movie poster\u003C/a> you won't need to worry about the linen backing for some time.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Linen backings on movie posters can be trimmed – it was actually once common to trim the backing right up until the edge of the poster – but it’s now considered a better practice to leave a border. This allows for safer handling and prevents the poster itself from touching the frame or other items, especially during shipping. Make sure you do not pull on the linen backing; it is not canvas and is not meant to be stretched.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Choose the Framing Materials: Movie Posters\u003C/h2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Just as with other prints, the materials you use to frame a movie poster will make a difference in preventing damage and extending its life.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Backing board\u003C/strong>: Regular foam board can be used with decorative movie posters as it is sturdy and lightweight. For vintage or valuable posters, use an acid-free foam board or, according to research done by framing industry expert Rob Markoff, fluted polypropylene. Some poster collectors framing very valuable posters use this material due to its rigidity and water repellency.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Much like any other valuable artwork, movie posters should not be dry mounted unless it is a replaceable poster you do not mind irreversibly damaging. If you must mount the movie poster, hinging at the top of the backing board using a reversible mounting method is preferred.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Mat board\u003C/strong>: While it is not commonly used in framing movie posters, adding a mat board helps keep the poster away from the frame and hold the piece in place. If you’d rather not use mat board but are framing very large posters, use picture frame spacers, which will keep the poster from touching the frame.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Glazing\u003C/strong>: Either acrylic or glass glazing works well in a movie poster frame. For vintage posters, use glazing that protects against UV damage such as Artglass UV-filter glass or UV-filter acrylic.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>One other area of concern may be the poster size. Many movie posters are large, such as 27x40 or 27x41, and glass is heavy and breakable if not handled properly. Beck has Asperger syndrome (a form of autism). He struggles with eye contact and understanding basic social cues when interacting with others. For most of his life, other kids his own age have had a hard time relating to Beck’s lengthy anecdotes or artistic depictions of car logos, gauges and compasses, however, his latest creative theme has become a catalyst for a true connection with his peers. “Beck’s current love of ‘Five Nights at Freddy’s’ is actually a video game that many kids play,” says Lee Ann, Beck’s mom. “So this passion truly has him engaging with kids his own age for the very first time in his life.” For Beck’s latest exhibit, he selected \u003Ca href=\"https://www.framedestination.com/catalogsearch/result?q=Wood+Frame+Profile+876+-+Black+%28matte%29+9440\">Wood Frame Profile 876 - Black (matte) 9440\u003C/a> to frame a few of his pieces. No thanks, Mom.\u003C/h2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Before we get into the interview with Beck, you should know he wasn’t always interested in art. In fact, he refused to use crayons or chalk when he was a young child. It wasn’t until his mom, Lee Ann, bought him a package of markers that his interest in drawing exploded. He just needed the right tool for the job. What has been a formative experience for you; what is the best advice you have ever been given?\u003C/strong> \u003C/em>\u003Cbr>Do your best! But my art teacher Mrs. Lee also tells me to take my time. I like things I can get done right away, but that doesn't always make my best work. So we usually work on a few things at a time.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>4. How is your personality reflected in your work?\u003C/em> \u003C/strong>\u003Cbr>I only paint what I have a passion for usually. For some lucky art collectors, thrift store shoppers and at-home framers, however, there was a little more to the frames than met the eye.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Declaration of Independence in a $4 Frame\u003C/h2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Perhaps one of the most famous “found in a thrift shop” legends, the story of the \u003Ca href=\"https://www.nytimes.com/1991/04/03/arts/declaration-of-independence-found-in-a-4-picture-frame.html\">Declaration of Independence hidden\u003C/a> inside a flea market frame sounds too good to be true. But it is: in 1989, a Pennsylvania man bought a \u003Ca href=\"https://www.framedestination.com/blog/resources/salvaging-rescued-artwork\">damaged painting at a flea market\u003C/a> simply because he liked the frame.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Upon taking it apart, a document fell out — one of just 24 surviving copies of the so-called Dunlap broadsides, valued at $800,000 to $1 million. At auction, the copy of the Declaration of Independence fetched over $2 million, more than double the appraised value.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Banksy’s Hidden Message\u003C/h2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The famous yet anonymous English street artist Banksy pulled off arguably one of the most expensive and artistic pranks in October 2018 when his \u003Ca href=\"https://www.nytimes.com/2018/10/18/arts/design/banksy-girl-with-balloon.html\">\u003Cem>Girl With Balloon\u003C/em> spray paint canvas went up for auction\u003C/a> at Sotheby’s in London. Hidden inside the ornate wood picture frame — chosen specifically by the artist, explained a Sotheby’s employee unwittingly before the auction in a \u003Ca href=\"https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vxkwRNIZgdY\">video later posted by Banksy\u003C/a> — was a shredder. Once the gavel struck at $1.4 million, the shredder was turned on and destroyed most of the painting, much to everyone’s surprise.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Apparently, Banksy had intended for the painting to be completely shredded. But the shredder failed, and part of the painting was preserved — perhaps making it even more valuable.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">‘All Quiet on the Western Front’ Movie Poster\u003C/h2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In another thrift store find, a \u003Ca href=\"https://moneywise.com/a/incredible-items-found-at-thrift-stores\">former antiques dealer discovered a framed print\u003C/a> of 19th-century painting \u003Cem>Shepherd’s Call\u003C/em> at a shop in South Carolina. When she brought the print home and took apart the frame to clean it, she discovered something much rarer than the print she had purchased: a “window card” for 1930 movie \u003Cem>All Quiet on the Western Front\u003C/em>.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The movie poster was sandwiched between the print and the backing board. While the window card would not be as pricy as the one-sheet \u003Ca href=\"https://www.framedestination.com/blog/resources/the-most-common-poster-sizes\">movie poster size\u003C/a>, an appraiser informed her that it was a valuable and rare find.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rembrandt in the Basement\u003C/h2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>A Rembrandt painting was \u003Ca href=\"http://mentalfloss.com/article/504146/6-valuable-works-art-discovered-peoples-attics-and-garages\">hiding in plain sight in New Jersey\u003C/a> — and it was the frame that disguised it. Tucked away in the basement, the 17th-century painting by the Dutch Old Master, titled \u003Cem>The Unconscious Patient (An Allegory of the Sense of Smell)\u003C/em>, was framed in a Victorian frame, which led its owners to believe the painting was from the 19th century. Only when it was put up for auction did art dealers begin to suspect the painting was part of the artist’s series on the five senses. The painting was sold and then resold again for a reported $4 million — a hefty price for a painting that was hidden away in a suburban basement.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Flemish Painting Revealed by Frame\u003C/h2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>While the frame in the Rembrandt case disguised the art, another picture frame gave away the valuable artwork hidden — yet again — in plain sight. Photographs and prints stuck to glass shouldn’t be removed unless you don’t mind the risk of ruining the print completely. If you do want to try, make a copy of the image just in case. There are two methods: scanning the photograph in a flatbed scanner or photographing it through the glass. These options may render varying results due to the thickness of the glazing over the photo.
