The first thing to remember is that you’re not alone. Creative blocks happen to all of us! The second thing to remember is that they are temporary, even when they seem to arrive with a neon sign that says, “You Will Be Forever Blocked, So Give Up Now.” Don’t believe it. Instead, see a block as an opportunity to slow down and refill the wellsprings of your creativity.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>While sharing my own ways of overcoming creative blocks, I’ll also sprinkle in ideas from others including professional artists and photographers featured in our \u003Ca href=\"https://www.framedestination.com/blog\">Artie’s Eight\u003C/a> Q&A series.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Overcoming Creative Block: 7 Tips\u003C/h2>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Shake up Your Scenery\u003C/h3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>If you live in the city, traipse through a park, zoo, or botanical garden. Go for a walk alongside a body of water or in a forest. Climb a mountain or a hill. If you’re a rural homesteader, take a trip to the city, visit a museum or show, or peruse local shops. Whether it be an antique shop, luxury car dealership or trendy boutique, design and inspiration is all around us. Fine artist and printmaker \u003Ca href=\"https://www.framedestination.com/blog/arties-eight/mindy-lighthipe-spotlight\">Mindy Lighthipe\u003C/a> is with me on this: “I get out of the house and get into nature,” she says. “It can be planting in my garden, going out in my kayak, or traveling to a favorite destination.” Photographer-decorator Cheryl Williver concurs: “A change of scenery is what works for me. I get out of my office or ‘comfort zone’ and get out and explore!”\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Tour your town with fresh eyes\u003C/h3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>No matter how large or small your city is, pretending to be a tourist will let you see it with a new perspective. Research what your town is known for. Make a day out of exploring its relevant sites. You might even wind up creating art with a local flavor, which can endear you to your fellow citizens. When University of North Texas photography student \u003Ca href=\"https://www.framedestination.com/blog/arties-eight/hudson-ingram-spotlight\">Hudson Ingram\u003C/a> is feeling blocked, he looks around and starts shooting. “I just take photographs of whatever I see in my daily life,” Hudson says. “[That] gives me insight to what I might be subconsciously thinking, and I create a project based on those thoughts.”\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Watch a movie or read a book that’s outside your normal genre\u003C/h3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>If rom-coms are your M.O., try a futuristic action movie instead. I like to read non-fiction. Yes, I learn a lot of practical stuff, but large doses can dull my senses. I mix it up with the classics, poetry, supernatural fiction, and dreamy travel essays\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Take a class or workshop in a different art form\u003C/h3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>If you’re a photographer, try a drawing workshop. This will force you to slow down and engage with your subject in a completely different manner. Artist \u003Ca href=\"https://www.framedestination.com/blog/arties-eight/david-hoque-spotlight\">David Hoque\u003C/a> agrees: “I’ve taught myself through YouTube and other sources how to improve my photography skills,” says David. “I have found that having good skills in this field is critical as a realist painter.”\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Peruse a dictionary or thesaurus\u003C/h3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>This is an old writer’s trick that can work for artists, too. Pick a single letter, like K. What images come to your mind when you see the words “kite,” kaleidoscope,” or “karma”?\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6. Out of sight, out of mind\u003C/h3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Sometimes it feels like a project we’re working on is staring us down, ruthlessly reminding us of our block. When \u003Ca href=\"https://www.framedestination.com/blog/arties-eight/rachel-kosbab-spotlight\">Rachel Kosbab\u003C/a>, a North Carolina fine artist, isn’t sure how to finish a painting, she hides it “for a week or so and work on other projects,” Rachel says. “When I come back to it, I usually have new great ideas.” Texas photographer \u003Ca href=\"https://www.framedestination.com/blog/arties-eight/jason-whitehead-spotlight\">Jason Whitehead\u003C/a> takes a similar approach: “I put the cameras away and try to find another outlet for creativity,” like listening to music or driving around. Michigan photographer \u003Ca href=\"https://www.framedestination.com/blog/arties-eight/joshua-mccann-spotlight\">Joshua McCann\u003C/a> says taking a nap is one of the things that clears up his creative blocks. This technique is No. 1 on \u003Ca href=\"https://www.creativebloq.com/graphic-design-tips/20-expert-tips-to-beat-creative-block-123523\">Creative Bloq\u003C/a>’s list of block breakers.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7. Eat your way to inspiration\u003C/h3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Colorful ingredients and beautifully plated dishes are a feast for the eyes. Plus, eating engages all our senses! I like to try new ethnic restaurants—you get to experience a little dose of culture along with the food. And if you appreciate that culture’s cuisine, check out their art as well. You may find a whole new source of artistic stimulation.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>BONUS TIP: Do some reflective journaling.\u003C/strong> Verbal reflection can stir up mental visuals. The internet is full of writing prompts, but here are a few of my favorites: “____________ makes me feel wild and free.” “My best childhood memory is _____________________.” “I’ve always been fascinated by ________________.” Botanical artist \u003Ca href=\"https://www.framedestination.com/blog/arties-eight/arties-eight-lotus-mcelfish-spotlight\">Lotus McElfish\u003C/a> told us that her blocks are most often due to her own insecurities. “[I’ve] got to get that out of the way and know my own value and artistic voice,” she says. Journaling positive affirmations can help with that. Open Your Door (Studio or Online)\u003C/h2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>If you have a studio with foot traffic nearby, keeping your door ajar welcomes guests to walk right in. You’ll be surprised by the people you’ll meet and the unexpected sales you’ll make. Even if you don’t have a physical studio, keep your “digital door” open with social pages, a store through an online marketplace such as Etsy, or your own website that others can help you promote.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Make the Most of Art Trends\u003C/h2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>If you’re grimacing, hear me out. Developing your own unique artistic style is imperative, and I agree that your work shouldn’t be subject to the latest craze. However, trends sell, and you can leverage them while staying true to your work.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>For example, trending icons, patterns, colors, etc. in fashion and home decor created in your style could be an interesting challenge that might even attract new customers. Trends in frame finishes are something else to watch for. A popular distressed black or \u003Ca href=\"https://www.framedestination.com/ctg/picture-frames/color/white.html\">white picture frame\u003C/a> may add character to an urban art installation or a rustic canvas floater frame might be a perfect complement to a farmhouse or landscape painting. Include a Certificate of Authenticity\u003C/h2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Photographer, \u003Ca href=\"https://www.kevinhollidayphoto.com/\">Kevin Holliday\u003C/a>, has a well-designed branded certificate he includes with each of luxury fine art prints. It includes details about the work as well as an artist statement. Even if yours is a much simpler version, a certificate of authenticity increases buyer confidence, gives buyers a little extra knowledge about the piece, and allows them to envision your art as an investment and complement to their collection.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Be Confident in Pricing Your Artwork or Ask for Help\u003C/h2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Even the most talented artists can get rattled when customers try to negotiate price at an art show. This is normal! Our artworks are our babies, and pricing something precious isn’t easy. If you’re finding it difficult to stick with what your art is worth, try this: Enlist a friend who believes in your art and can either stand firm with justification or negotiate with clients. You can trade out services if you don’t have the cash to pay them. It will be well worth it!\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Know the Power of Quality Art Framing and Components\u003C/h2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Whether you need ready made frames or want to create a custom picture frame to your exact specifications, quality framing adds value to your work so don’t settle for less. Pricing confidence comes more easily when you have high-quality, precision components that are professionally crafted and tailored for your art. As photographer Kevin Holliday shared:\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cblockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n\u003Cp>“For my solo exhibition this past summer, I leaned on Frame Destination to cut the mats for me. I will typically handle these things myself, but for 24 prints that were all going to be framed with very finicky \u003Ca href=\"https://www.framedestination.com/prod/c/crescent-8ply-ragmat-museum-full-sheet.html\">8-ply cotton mats\u003C/a>, I felt it would be best to outsource that part of the process. Bottom line is that I’m selling Mercedes and Audi’s, not Honda’s and Toyota’s…people take note of quality when they see it, and they are willing to pay for it. Show Off Your Artistic Style\u003C/h2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Like in the movie, Jerry Maguire, your art should say to its frame, “You complete me.” But make sure it’s the right style for your work, enhancing and complementing your art. Choose the gallery style option for framing to highlight the art, the non-gallery style to use the frame package as an extension of the art, or explore these tips for \u003Ca href=\"https://www.framedestination.com/blog/picture-frames/wood-frames-vs-metal-frames\">choosing between a wood or metal frame\u003C/a> for your art.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Taking home a framed work can motivate buyers. It’s perfect and ready to be displayed. They can already envision where it will go. Just make sure your art is the main attraction, and the components showcase it best.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Image courtesy of @byramshorestudio\u003C/h6>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7. \"KISS: Keep It Simple for Shows.\"\u003C/h2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Our spin on the traditional KISS method reminds us that choosing the same frame, mat, and (if possible) size for gallery or art shows can be a great way to reduce your cost and stress levels. Keeping things uniform will also reinforce your signature style, plus helps you take advantage of volume discounts.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\u003Cdiv class=\"wp-block-image\">\n\u003Cfigure class=\"alignleft\">\u003Cimg data-public-id=\"blog/percher/percher.png\" src=\"https://res.cloudinary.com/frame-destination/images/w_467,h_394,c_scale/f_auto,q_auto/v1661451590/blog/percher/percher.png?_i=AA\" alt=\"Art Gallery\" class=\"wp-post-3516 wp-image-3520\" data-format=\"png\" data-transformations=\"f_auto,q_auto\" data-version=\"1661451590\" data-seo=\"1\">\u003C/figure>\u003C/div>\n\n\n\u003Cp>Can you break this rule? Absolutely. While I advocate the KISS method for framing art, I’ve been happily proven wrong on a few occasions. For example, one of our customers had striking monochromatic floral photographs that were printed on metal, framed in a simple silver metal frame, and not selling particularly well. We worked with him to choose mat boards in various, complementary colors that made his artwork pop — and sell in high volume.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Image courtesy of @pecherskyyphotography\u003C/h6>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cbr class=\"\">8. Go Frameless\u003C/h2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Some potential customers can’t afford a framed piece or may be away from home when shopping and don’t want to travel with a bulky piece. Offer them alternatives such as matted prints in clear bags. Another option is gallery wrapping, where artwork is stretched and affixed onto \u003Ca href=\"https://www.framedestination.com/ctg/custom-frames/stretcher-bar-frames.html\">stretcher bars\u003C/a>. \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>And be sure to preserve the value of your art by transporting it to and from shows using a unique, reusable protective \u003Ca href=\"https://www.framedestination.com/photo-storage/gallery-pouch.html\">GalleryPouch\u003C/a>. You can even offer them to your vacationing buyers to assist them in getting their art home safe and make a few extra bucks.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">9. Learn More About the Business of Art\u003C/h2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>One of my favorite resources is \u003Ca href=\"https://artbizsuccess.com/\">Alyson Stanfield’s website\u003C/a>. I also highly recommend her book, I'd Rather Be in the Studio! The Artist's No-Excuse Guide to Self-Promotion. In addition, I love \u003Ca href=\"https://www.framedestination.com/blog/resources/book-review-art-inc\">Art Inc. by Lisa Congdon\u003C/a>.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">10. Expose Yourself, in a Good Way\u003C/h2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Connect with your audience through societies, non-profit groups, niche galleries, or even coffee shops where those that may have an interest in your subject matter hang out. But don’t stop there. However, many individuals have large film photo collections, perhaps stretching back for decades, that pre-date the digital era and need to be managed and preserved.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Modern photographers also continue to print photos for a variety of reasons. In some cases, prints are easier to view and share, and some people simply prefer to look at prints rather than digital photos on screens. Prints are also the best way to formally or permanently display photos. No matter whether photos are freshly printed or years old, proper storage and organization will keep them safe and preserve them in the best condition for future viewing.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Storage Materials\u003C/h2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The best storage options for photographs depend on a number of factors, including how frequently it will be viewed and whether it is part of a larger collection that must be organized. No matter what type of storage you choose for your photos, investing in quality is important. A cheap photo album or storage box will be more likely to contain materials or chemicals that can damage photos over time. In order to preserve important photographs, the \u003Ca href=\"http://www.archives.gov/preservation/holdings-maintenance/general-guidance.html\">National Archive recommends using plastic or paper materials\u003C/a> that pass the ANSI IT9.16 Photographic Activity Test, or PAT. Materials that qualify under PAT have been shown not to cause staining, fading or discoloration of photos.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Albums vs. Boxes\u003C/h2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Photo albums and photo storage boxes are two common and effective ways of \u003Ca href=\"https://www.framedestination.com/prod/c/protective-crystal-clear-bags.html\">archiving photos\u003C/a>. The best choice for your photos depends on your needs. Photos that are going to be viewed frequently benefit from being stored in high-quality photo albums. Albums are designed to allow easy viewing without having to touch the photos themselves. Albums are also great for photos that benefit from accompanying notes to explain who is in the photos, when or where they were taken or to provide further information. Notes can be inserted in separate pages or sections so they can be viewed along with the photos. This is beneficial because they still won’t touch the photos, so if there is any acid in the notepaper, it will not harm the photo. It also means notes can be kept with photos without writing on the back of the photo itself, avoiding problems with the ink damaging the photo over time.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Where photo albums are great for viewing photos, they also take up a lot of space relative to the number of photos they can store. Some collections are better suited for photo storage boxes. A box may take up less space than an album but can hold more photos. Boxes are good for photos that need to be preserved but are looked at less frequently as well as photos that are self-explanatory or don’t require extra notes. Archival photo storage boxes are the best way to preserve a large collection of photos, along with associated negatives if they have been kept, while taking up the least amount of space.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Organizing Your Photos\u003C/h2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Just as important as preserving your photos is organizing them. Without some system of organization, a large photo collection becomes difficult, if not impossible, to manage. Disorganized photos are less likely to be viewed and enjoyed because of the difficulty of locating a particular photo or set of photos when wanted.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Organizing can be a very personal thing. The best way to organize personal photos is the way that makes sense to the person who owns them. But photos that have interest for a larger group of people, such as extended family photos, benefit from a clear organization system that is easily understood by all.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Basic categories for organizing photos can include the time when they were taken, where they were taken, and who is in them. Photos can be organized around events or around groups of people. Consistency is key to staying organized, no matter what system is chosen. Also, clear labeling of photo albums or boxes, or of the photos themselves, can help to identify a set of photos more quickly. If boxes or albums are labeled with the time the photos were taken, the associated event, and the group of people who are in them (such as “family,” “kids,” “work team,” or so on), then it will be much easier to pick out the right group of photos later.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Another option is to go digital!\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Digitally Archiving Your Photos\u003C/h3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cspan class=\"gmail-c-message__body\">Organizing your photos shouldn’t just be in the studio. Archiving your photos online can provide so many benefits to a photographer’s career. With an inventory management program like \u003Ca href=\"https://www.artworkarchive.com/?utm_campaign=framedestination\">Artwork Archive\u003C/a>, you can easily manage your prints and editions, add tags and descriptions, group your work into collections, manage the locations and shows tied to each work, see what’s available and what’s sold, generate professional reports, share your work online or privately to collectors, and so much more. But with all these terms — archival, museum-quality and photo-safe — it may be confusing to know what they all mean.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Terminology of Conservation Framing\u003C/h2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>There are a number of terms that are used when describing picture frames and their various materials: acid-free, archival, conservation quality, and museum-quality, to name a few. While these terms can be useful to convey certain characteristics of the products you’ll be using, these aren’t legal or standardized terms, \u003Ca href=\"https://www.imagepermanenceinstitute.org/webfm_send/312\">according to the Image Permanence Institute\u003C/a>.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>One terms that the IPI uses itself, however, is \u003Cstrong>photo-safe\u003C/strong>. This term means that the picture framing supplies comply with \u003Ca href=\"https://www.iso.org/standard/60377.html\">ISO 18902\u003C/a>, the international standard that outlines the requirements for album, storage and picture framing materials that prevent damage to printed images.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Photo-Safe Tests\u003C/h2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>ISO 18902 covers all types of picture framing materials, including paper and paperboard (i.e. mat board and mounting board), plastic, metal, adhesives and tapes, glazing, and more. Each type of material has its own requirements, so mat board won’t necessarily follow the same “rules” as an adhesive, for example.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>A number of tests can be carried out to ensure that the material complies with the restrictions:\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Photographic Activity Test (PAT)\u003C/h3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>A requirement for all framing materials, the Photographic Activity Test, commonly known as the PAT, is also its own international standard (ISO 18916). There are two types of this test: the Standard PAT (Black & White) and the Color PAT (Dye Coupler Reactivity), the latter of which is always tested alongside the Standard.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>This test determines whether there are any chemical interactions between the picture framing material and a photograph. The material is placed in an incubator with controlled temperature and humidity, which simulates aging. Two detectors are used: one tests for oxidation and reduction reactions, which cause fading, spots and silver mirroring, while the other tests for chromophores, which cause yellowing.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">pH and Alkaline Reserve Tests\u003C/h3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The pH test determines whether the framing material — generally a paper product such as mat board or mounting board — is acidic, neutral or basic. \u003Ca href=\"https://www.framedestination.com/blog/resources/acid-arts-natural-enemy\">Acid is a natural enemy of art\u003C/a>, so this test can be of utmost importance, and it is used for both paper products as well as adhesives. The test is straightforward: a sample of the material is soaked in distilled water, and then the pH is measured.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The alkaline reserve test measures the percentage of alkaline reserve of the paper, meaning how much acid it would take to neutralize the alkaline buffering. Paper-based materials must have an alkali reserve of at least 2% calcium carbonate to pass this test.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Kappa Number Test (Lignin Content)\u003C/h3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The Kappa Number Test will show the level of lignin in the paper product. Lignin produces acid, so ensuring that the level of lignin is not excessive helps determine how long the print can last when in contact with a certain framing material.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>With this test, the paper product reacts with potassium permanganate; afterwards, the amount of permanganate is measured. The more lignin in the product, the less potassium permanganate there will be left. These tests are only used on paper products.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Colorant Bleed Test\u003C/h3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>This test is used on colored paper-based products and labeling materials, as they use dye or pigments that can spread to other materials when in contact with water. With this test, the paper or labeling material is pressed against bond paper in distilled water. Afterwards, the bond paper is examined to see how much of the dye or pigment transferred to it.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Additional Photo-Safe Requirements\u003C/h2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>There may be other requirements for certain materials beyond these tests to ensure they’re still photo-safe, and they can be pretty specific. Adhesives, for example, cannot be rubber-based, while paper products such as mat board cannot be made of post-consumer recycled paper. Plastics — such as those used in photo corners — must not contain plasticizers or chlorinate, nitrate or acetate plastic.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Many of the products that Frame Destination has determined “archival quality” or “museum grade” pass at least one of these tests. They also prevent bugs from making a snack of your artwork as well as keep the humidity levels from fluctuating too much within the frame, both of which can permanently damage artwork. Standard Kraft paper is one of the most common types of backing paper used in non-conservation framing projects. They are also puncture-resistant but breathable, additional benefits for those who are framing artwork for the long term.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Attaching a Dust Cover in Six Steps\u003C/h2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>To attach backing paper to a picture frame, you’ll need just a few items:\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n\u003Cli>Dust cover\u003C/li>\n\n\n\n\u003Cli>Adhesive, such as \u003Ca href=\"https://www.framedestination.com/ctg/framing-accessories/photo-mounting-supplies/atg-tape.html\">ATG tape\u003C/a> or \u003Ca href=\"https://www.framedestination.com/prod/s/lineco-white-ph-neutral-adhesive.html\">liquid PVA glue\u003C/a>\u003C/li>\n\n\n\n\u003Cli>Precision knife or dust cover trimmer\u003C/li>\n\u003C/ul>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Step 1\u003C/strong>: Cut a section of backing paper slightly larger than the size of the frame. If using ATG tape, apply a continuous strip of tape all around the back of the frame, approximately 1/8-inch from the edge. If using PVA glue, apply a thin bead of glue all around the edge. Using a folded paper towel or your finger, spread the glue evenly, ensuring that you are not getting glue on the visible, outside edge of the frame.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Step 3\u003C/strong>: Place the backing paper on a flat surface. Pick up the frame and place it face up on the backing paper. Press firmly in place.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Step 5\u003C/strong>: Turn the frame over and inspect the edges of the frame to ensure the paper has adhered, firmly pressing along the areas in which the paper has not properly been attached.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Step 6\u003C/strong>: Place the frame back on the table face up and, using the precision knife, carefully cut away at the excess backing paper. Alternatively, use the dust cover trimmer. Make sure that none of the dust cover is visible from the front of the frame.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Other Methods to Attach Backing Paper\u003C/h2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>While there are some hard and fast rules for picture framing, there are numerous acceptable ways to attach a dust cover. Some framers dampen Kraft backing paper with water before attaching it to the frame so that it will shrink as it dries, resulting in a very taut seal.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>However, Chris Paschke, a certified picture framer (CPF, GCF), warns against this very practice as potentially damaging, explaining that water should never be used on a paper backing as \"it could shrink unevenly and damage or break a narrow frame. Moisture should always be kept away from art and framing.\"\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Ca href=\"https://www.artistsnetwork.com/art-mediums/pastel/picture-framing-tips/\">Another method to attach a dust cover\u003C/a> is to lay the frame face down and place the dust cover on top of it. With this method, you first attach one corner of the oversize backing paper to a corner of the frame; this allows you to pull the paper taut across it in both directions.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>For my personal photography, I do not have to be concerned about the appearance of the back. Custom framers, of course, do have to be concerned, since they will be handing the final picture frame to their customer.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Whichever method you choose, your end result will be a picture frame that looks as though it came from a custom frame shop.
