As one of the planet’s most influential artists alive today, Hockney has, for the past several years, created iPad drawings using a program called \u003Ca href=\"https://apps.apple.com/us/app/brushes-redux/id932089074\">Brushes Redux\u003C/a>. He applies multiple layers of vivid color, just like he would do in a painting. Last year, a friend visited the Museum of Fine Art in Houston. I’ve tried several apps on \u003Ca href=\"https://www.creativebloq.com/digital-art/art-on-the-ipad-1232669\">Creative Bloq’s curated top 22 list\u003C/a>, including Illustrator, Photoshop, ArtRage, Affinity Designer, Artstudio Pro, and Procreate. They all have their advantages, but I think \u003Ca href=\"https://procreate.art\">Procreate\u003C/a> is the best value for iPad work. It’s fast, responsive, intuitive, and has more than 200 brushes. You can start and finish large works of art right on your iPad — although I, as well as other artists I know, start our art on Procreate using an iPad and then transfer the work to a Photoshop or Illustrator desktop program.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>One of my favorite things about Procreate is the flexibility of having a “do-over.” As an artist with training in traditional natural science and botanical illustration, I focus on realism, and I still draw from life with graphite and colored pencils every single day. However, working in Procreate with the ability to “undo” allows me to be a little more playful and try out different media for other types of projects. It’s possible to create a decent number of layers in Procreate depending on the size of your project. For example, on this \u003Ca href=\"https://folio.procreate.art/discussions/12\">discussion board\u003C/a> alone, fellow Procreate aficionados create hundreds (if not thousands) of unique brushes. \u003Ca href=\"https://www.etsy.com/search?q=procreate%2520brushes\">Etsy\u003C/a> also has a huge group of people selling these brushes, including nature, neon, and portrait brushes for skin, eyes, and hair. And that’s only the beginning!\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cdiv aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\">\u003C/div>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>A Bird, a Beach House, and a Moonlit Bear\u003C/strong>\u003C/h3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>All of my artwork on Procreate is done on the latest generation iPad Pro 12.9-inch, including the images below. “Golden Eagle” was inspired by an eagle I saw on a winter summit hike at nearby Mount Mitchell here in western North Carolina. As my first Procreate piece, it was a bit of a challenge to figure out how to mimic the feathers and the texture around the eye area. For the feathers, I ended up using the Fine and Flowing Hair brushes located under Materials in Procreate’s standard brush library. I used a combination of brushes from the library’s Industrial section to create the grayish texture around the eye. \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The second image, “Outer Banks Beach House,” was prompted by a winter trip Mark and I took to North Carolina’s famed barrier islands. After our visit, I took an online digital art class by Texas multi-media artist \u003Ca href=\"http://www.triciadewey.com/\">Tricia Dewey\u003C/a>. Have you ever seen the 2008 movie \u003Ca href=\"https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0956038/\">“Nights in \u003C/a>\u003Ca href=\"https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0956038/\">Rodanthe\u003C/a>\u003Ca href=\"https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0956038/\">,”\u003C/a> starring Richard Gere and Diane Lane? It’s set in a tiny town in the Outer Banks, and features a rambling, weathered house on the Atlantic shore. For art you’ll view closely, 300 dpi is preferred. Art seen from farther away can be lower, down to 150 dpi. Finding paper to fit your work may, in some cases, be tricky. I like \u003Ca href=\"https://www.redrivercatalog.com/shopbypapersize.html\">Red River Paper \u003C/a>for its selection of sizes: standard, hard-to-find, pano, and rolls. Check out these very positive statistics:\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cul class=\"wp-block-list\">\u003Cli>According to the National Endowment for the Arts, between 2015 and 2021, the value added to America’s economy by creative professionals grew by an average of 4% annually.\u003C/li>\u003Cli>The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics revealed that demand for animators, visual effects artists, and graphic artists will increase.\u003C/li>\u003Cli>The rapidly growing “Gig Economy” includes the freelance artist sector, of which 53% of working Generation Zers are currently participating in — more than any other generation.\u003C/li>\u003Cli>Although year-to-year growth for the professional photography industry is estimated at only 5%, the value is expected to grow to $41 billion in 2023.\u003C/li>\u003Cli>With better accessibility to technology, the lines are blurring between photography as a hobby and as a profession, opening a whole new emerging sector of custom art prints for amateur photographers or home decorators.\u003C/li>\u003Cli>Local camera clubs are seeing a resurgence in membership. Others may be new information.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Let’s give a voice to some of these unspoken rules, shall we?\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Prioritize the Process\u003C/h2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Choose your frame style first, art location second and arrangement (if multiple frames) third. How do you choose your frame style? That depends on the look you’re going for, and it probably depends on your \u003Ca href=\"https://www.framedestination.com/blog/picture-frames/top-4-interior-design-styles-and-frames-that-fit-right-in\">\u003Cspan class=\"s1\">interior design\u003C/span>\u003C/a> preference. If you can hone in on the vibe you lean toward—i.e., Coastal, Contemporary, Modern Farmhouse or Mid-Century Modern—then it’s easy to choose frames that suit the ambience you’re creating.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Not Every Artwork Needs a Mat Board\u003C/h2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Mat boards are a great way to enhance a painting or a photograph, and they give an extra presence to smaller works. However, they aren’t a must in every situation. For example, you can go sans mat with watercolors and artwork on textured paper. Mix Wood and Metal Frames—but Unify\u003C/h2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Wood tends to be traditional, while metal has a modern feel. Can you display both in the same room? Yes! But I do suggest unifying them in terms of color or texture. For example, using a textured metal frame like our \u003Cspan class=\"s1\">Profile 99 in Satin Black\u003C/span> with our textured wood frame \u003Cspan class=\"s1\">Profile 543 in Black Dune\u003C/span>. Symmetry Isn’t the Only Way\u003C/h2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>If you’re displaying a group of paintings or photos on a wall, a symmetrical design is the usual format. For example, six frames that are the same size might be placed three-by-three, evenly spaced. Using an odd number of frames creates asymmetry for a more casual, relaxed look. Five frames of varying sizes placed in a staggered arrangement would be an example of asymmetry.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Venture into Unexpected Rooms\u003C/h2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Like your closet. After all, we step into them every morning to get dressed. Looking at a piece of art, particularly something inspirational, is a great way to start the day. We know of one boutique hotel company that hired a local artist to create hand-drawn birds and palm leaves in the closets of their Miami property. What a lovely surprise for guests! Bathrooms are another room we enter every day. Because of the high humidity and changing temperatures in bathrooms, metal frames or art will be a better option than wood. Consider the Spacing Between Frames\u003C/h2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>I’ve seen groupings spaced as close together as 1/32” and as spread apart as several feet. Very tight and wide-spaced groupings can work in some applications like tiny rooms or giant walls. But the standard is around two to four inches, with six inches being the maximum to keep the viewer’s focus. It’s all I can do to keep from straightening the offender if I see a tilted picture at a restaurant, or heaven forbid, a friend’s house. Either way you’re in the zone, doing what you were made to do.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>When the time comes to frame your masterpiece, the last thing you want is for the paper to buckle in the frame, tainting or even ruining all your hard work. But how do you prevent it?\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>The big buckling bummer\u003C/strong>\u003C/h2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Why does paper art sometimes buckle even once it’s protected in an \u003Ca href=\"https://www.framedestination.com/ctg/custom-frames.html\">art frame\u003C/a>? Because temperature and humidity fluctuate, even indoors, and paper expands and contracts with the changes. Glass transfers heat faster than air does. When paper art is directly touching the glass within a frame, the paper will react to humidity changes around the edges before the middle of the paper, causing buckling.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cfigure class=\"wp-block-image\">\u003Cimg data-public-id=\"blog/FD-ArtBuckle-Illustration1/FD-ArtBuckle-Illustration1.png\" src=\"https://res.cloudinary.com/frame-destination/images/w_1024,h_353,c_scale/f_auto,q_auto/v1661445713/blog/FD-ArtBuckle-Illustration1/FD-ArtBuckle-Illustration1.png?_i=AA\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-post-4205 wp-image-4210\" data-format=\"png\" data-transformations=\"f_auto,q_auto\" data-version=\"1661445713\" data-seo=\"1\">\u003C/figure>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In addition, the backing of the frame and the paper of the artwork do not expand and contract at the same rate. When the backing shrinks, the paper buckles.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ways to Prevent Buckling - Artists\u003C/h2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>With the glass and air quality seemingly working against your creation, what’s an artist to do? The main way to keep paper art from buckling is to not tape down all the edges of the paper, because the paper and the backing to which you tape it will not expand/contract at the same rate. So when the backing shrinks, the paper has no choice but to buckle. Instead, \u003Ca href=\"https://www.framedestination.com/ctg/framing-supplies/picture-frame-spacers.html\">frame spacers\u003C/a> and mat board can be used to help hold down the edges without tape. If you’re using a mat, mount the image with \u003Ca href=\"https://www.framedestination.com/ctg/framing-supplies/photo-mounting-supplies.html\">photo corners\u003C/a> or T-hinge mounting so the paper is free to expand/contract independently of the mounting board.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>(If you’re not using a mat, the frame is the same is already the same size as the image, so it doesn’t need to be mounted. However, if you want long-term archival framing you should use frame spacers to keep the art off the glass.)\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Using mat board and spacers allows air to circulate in the space between the art and the glass, helping keep a steady humidity level over the whole artwork. So as the art, mats and backing are expanding and contracting “freely,” buckling can be kept to a minimum. Sort of like how skyscrapers are constructed with some “sway” built in, so in high winds the building can shift without damaging the structural integrity. But I digress.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Ways to Prevent Buckling - Photographers\u003C/strong>\u003C/h2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>For photographers, the preferred way to keep a print from buckling is to dry mount the image before framing it. In this case, the image is permanently adhered to the backing board, which then forces them to expand and contract together.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>By the way, dry mounting is semi-archival if you mount your work to archival backing board. However, it isn’t museum-archival because it obviously can’t be removed from the backing board.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Paper choice can help\u003C/strong>\u003C/h2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Using specific types of paper can also deter buckling, according to Drew Hendrix, President of Red River Paper.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“Resin-coated photo papers, like \u003Ca href=\"https://www.redrivercatalog.com/browse/68lb-ultrapro-satin.html\">UltraPro Satin\u003C/a> and \u003Ca href=\"https://www.redrivercatalog.com/browse/66lb-polar-pearl-metallic-inkjet-photo-paper.html\">Polar Gloss Metallic\u003C/a>, tend to resist warping better than other paper types,” Drew says. “Heavier, thicker papers also tend to stay flat. Matte papers and papers with no coating on the back can absorb and release moisture readily, and they are more pron e to warp. It’s a work in progress, but I’ve done my best to convey as much information as possible in one succinct paragraph. Remember that your \u003Ca href=\"https://www.framedestination.com/blog/resources/writing-artist-biography-vs-statement-why-you-need-both\">artist biography\u003C/a> is the place to give lots of details about yourself as an artist.\u003C/p>\n\u003Cp>Food is life, and life is art. I use colored pencils and digital media to create art and illustrations focused on food and ingredients. My colorful drawings show the beauty of food, while digitally added typography provides both practical information and commercial appeal to the viewer. I see my drawings and illustrations as stories or snapshots of daily life, rather than just strictly art, and it is my hope that they will encourage viewers to think more deeply about food. For inspiration, I read constantly and eat voraciously. I am also inspired by memories of my rural upbringing where we grew our own vegetables, ate local meat and seafood, and faithfully recreated traditional recipes.\u003C/p>\n\u003Ch2>\u003Cstrong>No more dreading\u003C/strong>\u003C/h2>\n\u003Cp>Whether you’re about to write your first artist statement or it’s time to revise your current one, I encourage you to put something down in writing. In fact, the whole decade is stretched before us like a blank canvas or a scene not yet photographed.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>That can be both exciting and a bit nerve-wracking for creative people!\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>As artists and photographers, we inherently understand the power of color to calm our minds and lift our spirits. Color experts get it, too. Last fall, many of them chose their “2020 colors of the year” with sensitivity to our collective desire for optimism as we enter a new era.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Perhaps the most well-known color trend forecaster, \u003Ca href=\"https://www.pantone.com/color-consulting/about-pantone-color-institute\">Pantone Color Institute\u003C/a>, selected \u003Ca href=\"https://www.pantone.com/color-intelligence/color-of-the-year/color-of-the-year-2020\">Classic Blue\u003C/a> as the Color of the Year for 2020. Leatrice Eiseman, Pantone’s Executive Director, told TIME magazine: “It’s a reassuring blue, full of calm and confidence.”\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Sounds like just what we need as we face an unfolding future. In fact, if we were to flashback to 1999 and all the anxiety of Y2K, we’d fine that Pantone’s 2000 Color of the Year was another member of the restful, reliable blue family: Cerulean.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\fA palette of possibilities.\u003C/h3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Ah, but Classic Blue is not alone in the 2020 color trends. Pantone selected 11 other colors for spring/summer 2020 that reflect our hope to balance stability with creative possibility. Pantone’s curated collection includes vibrant colors (Orange Peel, Biscay Green), softer tones (Sunlight, Coral Pink) and neutrals (Ash, Brilliant White).\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Color curators galore.\u003C/h3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Pantone isn’t the only company who designed their own predictions for \"Color Trends 2020\". When we compared the palettes picked by \u003Ca href=\"https://www.hgtvhomebysherwinwilliams.com/color-trends\">Sherwin Williams\u003C/a>, \u003Ca href=\"https://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/color-overview/color-palettes/color-of-the-year-trends-2020\">Benjamin Moore\u003C/a>, \u003Ca href=\"https://www.behr.com/consumer/inspiration/2020-color-trends/?gclid=Cj0KCQiAxrbwBRCoARIsABEc9siitYiuejRNPPJ4cFZIOpi-wEdivvdScKIV-kXpBrOd5lFG3FvWaNAaAmUnEALw_wcB\">Behr\u003C/a> and \u003Ca href=\"https://www.crescentcardboard.com/article/2020-spring-summer-color-trends/\">Crescent\u003C/a>, we found some commonalities. We also found inspiration, which led us to bring some of these beautiful colors to our frames.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>I'll highlight a few of our favorite color groupings, and the Frame Destination frames that play off these 2020 color trends.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Shades of blue.\u003C/h3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Pantone was joined by others who named various blues among their 2020 color trends. Witness Sherwin-Williams’ jewel tones; Benjamin Moore’s periwinkle, blue-green and sapphire; Behr’s softly bright blue; and Crescent’s peaceful blue. On the orange/brown spectrum, the color trend-setters have specified assorted shades of pumpkin, coral, brick and cinnamon.
