There’s a lot to consider: How much do you want to change? Which elements should you add? Which color palette will work best? What’s “in” right now?

While interior design is largely focused on current trends, we don’t advise making alterations solely for the sake of what’s popular at the moment. You want the space to be a reflection of your story and your life. So, when wondering where to begin, think about what’s trending — but also what will appeal to you for more than five minutes.

We’re fond of the six design trends below because we’re confident they will stick around into 2023 and beyond. Thrifting, or buying secondhand furniture and accessories, is a more sustainable way to shop. It also makes for a fun and creative way to add a layered, collected look to any room. The phrase “They don’t make ’em like they used to” speaks to craftsmanship and especially applies to vintage furniture, which has already stood the test of time. Natural wood with an unfinished edge can bring in beautiful warmth, especially above a fireplace, while stones in a bathroom floor or shower bring the feeling of an everyday spa getaway. Whether you’re framing art for a client, family member, or yourself, you may wish to take extra steps to ensure it isn’t damaged over time.

Although there are nuanced differences, “conservation framing, “preservation framing,” and “archival framing” tend to be used interchangeably to describe a method of framing that helps keep artwork from deteriorating. In this article I’ll share some easy, basic steps to help your art last longer while on display within a frame.

NOTE: If your artwork is very valuable or needs to last for generations, it’s best to seek guidance from a professional framer specifically trained in conservation framing. Keep in mind that it’s impossible to permanently preserve or archive a print. Hundreds of years, yes. But even full-on museum-grade framing won’t protect art forever.

1. Glove up

Professional and hobby photographers go out of their way to protect their negatives, photos, and prints from fingerprints. Their product of choice is often Lineco Cotton Darkroom Gloves. Art framers and conservators also use these lint-free, dust-free gloves to keep harmful oils from touching art and documents during handling and framing. If these gloves are good enough for the professionals, be assured that they’ll serve you well, too.

2. Choose the Proper Mount Board

You probably know that acid can be a major source of damage to art. An important step in archival framing is selecting framing components that are not just acid free, but also lignin free. Standard mat boards and mounting boards are made of wood pulp paper, which contains acid. Lignin is a binding agent that holds wood together, forming acid as it degrades. So, make sure you use mat board made of alpha-cellulose or cotton rag rather than paper.

3. Use Proper Mounting Board, Not Cardboard

When mounting your artwork, resist the urge to use cardboard even if you have a readily available stack of it in your office closet. Cardboard is full of acidic compounds. Instead, use a quality acid-free foam board. Part of Encore's Masterpiece collection, this mounting board is thick, lightweight, acid-free, and neutralizes external pollutants — perfect for the archival preservation of valuable art and photographs. It comes in two thicknesses: 3/16” and 1/8”. (By the way, mounting board, backing board, mount board, foam board, and foam core all refer to the same thing.)

4. Select the Proper Glazing

Regular glass or acrylic will safeguard your art from prying fingers and detrimental components in the air, while also somewhat protecting against humidity. (High humidity areas may require an additional moisture barrier inside the frame.) Although plain glass and acrylic will block about half of the harmful UV rays, consider UV filter glass or acrylic, which can block at least 98% of the UV radiation. This is a good choice if you’re concerned about longevity or if the artwork will be displayed in a room with some direct sunlight.

5. Mount Your Art Correctly

If you are not using a mat, mounting is simple. Assuming the print is the same size as the inside of the frame, you just slide the art behind the glass or acrylic. The glass, mounting board, and frame will hold the art in place.

If you are using a mat, do not tape the sides of the print to the mat or mounting board. The mat, mounting board, and artwork will all expand and contract at different rates as the temperature changes. If you tape the artwork down, this expansion and contraction will soon cause the artwork to buckle. Instead, use archival quality hinging tape or hinging tissue to secure the print to the back of the mat at just a couple of points.

If the print is wider than 24 inches, you might use three points of tape. This leaves the print mostly loose inside the frame package so it can expand and contract without binding. To find more information about how to hinge a print, see our article titled “Art Hinging Tape: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.” For other mounting techniques, see this blog.

6. Protect the Back Side

Lineco’s Light Gray Acid-Free Frame Backing Paper adds archival value to your framed artwork. Unlike everyday brown or black kraft paper that punctures easily, this backing paper is acid-free and buffered with 3% calcium carbonate to help protect your art. Moderate porosity allows the frame package to breathe, and the standard weight makes it easy to cut and handle. You can adhere this acid-free backing paper to the frame with our ATG tape or liquid adhesives.

7. Hang It Up!

The final step is to hang your artwork. Use a professional hanging kit specific to your type of frame and install it according to the directions. Try to avoid direct sunlight. Even if you use UV filter glass or acrylic, direct sunlight will eventually degrade the art. Also, avoid placing your framed art near fireplaces, radiators, or vents — all of which can cause extreme temperature changes.

For more guidance on archival framing, dive into this article by the Library of Congress — the world’s largest library, charged with preserving millions of books, photographs, newspapers, and more. The benefit of hinge mounting is that it’s considered an archival method of mounting artwork — but only if you’re using proper acid-free hinging tape. These specialty tapes adhere art to the mounting board without touching the face of the art. They also have a forgivable “reversibility” quality that allows you to peel the tape off your art without harming it.

With hinge mounting, you’re using strips of tape that serve as “hinges” connecting the art to the mount board. A subgroup of hinging tape is hinging tissue. The latter is thinner and more transparent than tape and is best used with translucent or super lightweight artwork.

Below I outline the three most common ways to mount your artwork onto a backer board in an archival, conservation-style way using hinging tape. They’re simple-yet-genius processes that I’m sure you’ll embrace once you try them. Later on, I break down “good, bad, and ugly” methods of mounting artwork.

3 Types of Hinges for Mounting Artwork

1. Pendant Hinge

This is a common hinge made by attaching a strip of hinging tape or tissue paper to the top of the artwork, adhering the upper half of the strip to the mounting board. This hinge assumes that you’re using a mat; otherwise, it will be visible. I always hinge the left and right sides of the art — plus the middle if it’s a wide image. Plan your placement before you attach the tape. The visual below is an example of how to use pendant hinges.

Note: Image for illustration purposes. T-Hinge

The T-hinge is a variant of the pendant hinge where you attach a crosspiece of tape over the initial hinge, providing greater stability when you are mounting heavier art such as collages, fiber art, or heavy watercolor paper. See example below.

Note: Image for illustration purposes. V-Hinge

Used in preservation framing, a V-hinge is a strip of hinging tape or tissue that’s pre-folded lengthwise. One side is applied to the back side of the artwork. The other half is then applied to the mounting board. If the artwork is executed on a heavy substrate, such as 300-pound watercolor paper, use a crosspiece for greater stability. The beauty of this hinge is how it’s hidden behind the art, so you can frame the image without a mat board, reducing your framing costs. The illustration below shows how it works.

Sometimes customers ask me: “Good grief, Joely, can’t I just attach the artwork to the back of the mat board with whatever adhesive is handy?” Yes, you certainly can. These are incredibly useful products — just not for framing your priceless photos and art. They aren’t designed for it.

Most of these everyday tapes should never be called upon in picture framing. The adhesives used in these products vary, but they usually contain synthetic or natural rubber and rubber-based adhesives which can become yellow, oily, and sticky as they age, damaging the artwork along the way. It’s not pretty, my friends.

Acrylic adhesives (like hinging tapes) are much more stable over time, and do not significantly discolor art and photos.

Other Photo Mounting Methods You Should Dump

Hinging the artwork on all four sides. Think of art as a living object that is executed, at least in part, onto or with organic ingredients. Proper mounting — hinging at the top of the artwork only — allows the bottom of the art to float freely and expand/contract with normal temperature changes in a home. These frames come in a variety of styles, including simple rounded corners and geometric shapes. Some also feature transparent glass or acrylic so you can see what's inside without having to remove the picture from its frame. Modern frames are perfect for displaying artwork that has an abstract quality, such as paintings done in bold colors and lines that evoke emotion.

How To Know What Size Picture Frame You Need?

When choosing a picture frame, it's important to take into account the size of your picture and how much space you have available on your wall. If you're putting up a small photo or painting, then you can use a smaller frame that won't dominate the room. However, if you want to display an object like a diploma or trophy with its accompanying certificate, then you'll need something larger in order for everything to fit inside.

Beyond the size, the style and material of the frame will also affect how it looks on your wall. If it's the art you're displaying, then you may want to go with a simple black frame in order to let the artwork shine. On the other hand, if you have a family portrait or photo of your kids as infants that you want to display prominently, then it might be better to choose a more ornate frame with lots of detail. In essence, the style of the frame will reflect how you want your object to be viewed by others.

What's The Difference Between a Poster Frame and A Picture Frame?

Poster frames and picture frames are both used to display art, but they serve very different purposes. A poster frame is designed specifically for posters, which are large-format pieces of paper that you can hang on a wall. Poster frames come in various sizes, ranging from extra small all the way up to super extra-large, so you can find the perfect fit for any poster.

Picture frames, on the other hand, are traditionally smaller (though "small" is relative here—they're still quite large!) and are designed to hold a single piece of art. Picture frames are usually made from wood or plastic, and they can be hung on the wall or placed on a shelf.

They come in a variety of colors and styles to suit any taste— you can find them in everything from simple black and white to gaudy gold-plated. You can also get picture frames that have glass inserts, which allow you to display your artwork without having to worry about damaging it.

More Resources

Shop All Picture Frames

Picture Frame Sizes

Written by Mark Rogers

Mark Rogers is the President and Co-Founder of Frame Destination. Any piece of art, from a sketch to a print, can be framed—and it's a great way to add personality and style to your home décor. And to help you better understand what framing is and how it works, we've put together this helpful guide. From display location to materials, we'll show you how to choose the right frame for your art and how to hang it so that it looks great.

Frames Are Meant to Complement the Art & Not Take Center Stage

The worst mistake you can make when framing any piece of art is to let the frame be the focal point. The frame should complement the art—not compete with it. If you go too far with your choice of materials and colors, it can take away from the beauty of the art itself. And that's the last thing you want to happen. So, before you start looking at frames and materials, think about the piece itself.

Is it modern, traditional or something in between? What colors are in the artwork? Do these colors match those of the frame?

If you're framing a modern piece, don't go with a traditional frame. If it's a traditional piece, don't go with a modern frame. The same goes for other features of the artwork such as size and shape. It's easy to get overwhelmed by all the options available to you but remember that choosing the right frame is just as important as choosing an art piece itself.

If you're not sure what type of frame to choose, it can be helpful to look at photos of other people's framed pieces. This way you'll see what types of frames work well with certain art styles and sizes. Alternatively, you can always ask a professional for advice. Many art galleries have framing experts on staff who can help you find the perfect frame to showcase your art.

Understand The Significance of Display Location

Art is meant to be seen, and it's important to choose the right spot for your work. Your choice should be based on how much space you have available, as well as other factors like lighting and foot traffic flow. You might want to think about whether you'd like the piece to be seen from every angle, or if it should be placed in a more private area where only those who are invited can see it.

As for the lighting, you'll want to make sure that the space has enough natural light. If it doesn't, you may need to consider adding additional lamps or overhead art gallery lights. In addition, your art should be placed where it won't be damaged by things like moisture or airborne particulates like dust.

To Frame or Not to Frame?

Perhaps the biggest question that you'll have to ask yourself is whether or not you should frame your art. Generally speaking, it's a good idea to frame your art. This will protect it from damage and make it look much more professional.

However, if you're working with a piece that already has a nice frame or if you want the art to stand out on its own without distraction, then don't feel obligated to get one. Either way, framing is a personal preference and will depend on the piece you're working with. It's a good idea to ask yourself why you want to frame your art before making your decision.

Choosing Glass for Fine Art Framing

Glass is the most common type used in fine art framing. It's made of tempered or laminated glass, which can be very strong and durable. Most people use it to protect their artwork from dust and moisture, as well as sunlight (which can fade colors). Here are some of the factors to consider when choosing art glass for framing:

1. UV Filter

Many glass frames come with a UV filter, which helps protect your artwork from ultraviolet light. This is especially important if you live in a sunny area or have windows that face south-facing walls. But even if you don't, it can still be worth getting a frame with a UV filter because it will block out some of the harmful rays that are emitted by fluorescent lights and computer screens.

2. Glass Weight

The weight of the glass is another important factor to consider. If you're framing a large piece of artwork, it's best to get a frame made from glass that's at least 1/8 of an inch thick. This will ensure that your frame doesn't bend under the weight of your art and cause damage to either one.

3. Anti-glare

The anti-glare coating on the glass makes it easier to view your art in various types of lighting. If you're planning on hanging your piece in a room that gets a lot of sunlight, look for frames with an anti-reflective coating so that it won't be too hard to see what's inside.

Paper

The type of paper that you choose for your frame can make a big difference in how it looks. You have to consider the thickness, texture and color of the paper when choosing which one to use. Standard photo paper is usually best suited for framing photos; however, if you're looking for something more durable or decorative, you may want to try using canvas or linen instead.

Moreover, matting the paper is also an important part of framing a piece of art. You can use any type of matting that you like, but it's best to avoid using anything too thick or flimsy because it will make your frame look cheap and unprofessional.

Backing

The backing material is the portion of your frame that supports the art itself. It's important to choose a material that will not only provide support for your picture but also complement its colors and style. You can use any type of backing you like, such as foamcore, plywood or even corkboard; however, these materials tend to be more expensive than other types of backing because they're made from more durable materials.

Canvas

The canvas is the artwork in most cases of fine art and generally, is sturdy enough to not require backing like a mat. However, if you do decide to use backing, it's important to choose a sturdy material. You can see our complete guide to framing canvases for more information.

Non-Traditional Frame

The non-traditional frame is a great option if you want to show off the art while still making it easy to hang on your walls. There are many different types of non-traditional frames, such as shadowbox frames and picture mats; however, they all have one thing in common: They allow the picture itself to be the star of the show. The non-traditional frame can be used to create a display that's meant to be seen and not just hung on the wall— it can be used to make a statement about the art, or it can simply be a way to showcase your favorite painting.

Frame Cost

The cost of a frame will depend on the type of frame that you choose. For example, a basic wood picture frame is usually cheaper than a custom-made metal shadowbox frame. However, if you're looking for something more unique, then it's worth investing in something that's made specifically for your artwork or photographs.

","
The world of fine art is something that can take a lifetime to truly understand. Proper sizing will ensure that your works are displayed and visible in a size that best compliments and brings out the best in your art or photos.

Choosing the correct picture sizes may also reduce administrative work such as having to crop out elements of the piece to ‘make it fit’.

What is Aspect Ratio in Regards to Picture Sizes?

Aspect ratio is a term used to describe the ratio of an image’s width to its height. Expressed as ‘X:X’ where ‘X’ is a whole number.

Aspect ratios are not just useful for understanding the size of the photo or image, but also its shape, which is always some variation of a rectangle or square.

For example, aspect ratio of 1:1 means that both the height and the width are equal, resulting in a perfect square. On the other hand, an aspect ratio of, say, 3:2, would result in an image with a larger height as compared to the width, creating a rectangle-shaped image.

Common Aspect Ratios

1:1

This results in a square image where both the width and height are equal in length. A 1:1 ratio is most commonly used for social media profile pictures, thumbnails, and small to medium-sized photos or artwork.

3:2

An aspect ratio of 3:2 is a common size, used often in digital photography and film alike. Interestingly, 3:2 is also the aspect ratio used for 35 mm film.

4:3

Used frequently for various PC monitors, digital cameras, and TVs, 4:3 is often an ideal aspect ratio to use for film or shooting photos or print photography that will also be displayed digitally on screen.

16:9

You’ve likely come across this aspect when watching movies on screen. It is also a common one used with widescreen TVs and computer monitors. Rectangle in shape, this ratio results in a size that’s slightly longer than the 4:3 ratio.

What Are the Standard Photo Sizes Used for Prints?

Photo prints offer the opportunity to transform your digital work or creative art into a print that can be enjoyed by many. But get the sizing wrong, and you could end up losing resolution or end up with certain elements off print due to necessary cropping. This makes it crucial to understand standard picture sizes with ratios.

4 x 6 inches

Arguably the most popular or normal photo size, the 4x6” photo print fits like a glove into a 3:2 aspect ratio, making it perfect for framed greeting cards, postcards, photos, and more. As for pixel length, shoot for 1200 x 1800 pixels for the highest quality resolution.

5 x 7 inches

Measuring slightly larger, the 5x7” is a great size for smaller photo prints and artwork. When using a digital camera to capture images, we suggest a 3.5:2.5 aspect ratio. As for pixels, 1500 x 2100 pixels is typically best.

8 x 10 inches

In the middle of the pack, we have the 8x10” sized photo print. For this size, an aspect ratio of 5:4 on your camera is usually the ideal setting. Although this may result in the need for minor cropping on the sides, it should be minimal.
