The indigenous people of the Navajo tribe hand-crafted many of their textiles, baskets, and blankets in colors inspired by desert hues and geometric patterns. When Spanish colonialists arrived in the American Southwest, elements of their architectural style — white stucco walls, wooden beams, and red clay rooftops — fit in well with their new climate. Hopi and Pueblo tribes added their influence through adobe homes. Intricate Talavera tiles that are iconic to this decor come from the rich volcanic soils around Puebla, Mexico. The construction involved no nails and consisted of just one room measuring 10 feet wide by 12 to 20 feet long. There was one window and a loft for sleeping. From the late 1800s through the early 1900s, America's pioneers built similar structures, stacking notched logs cut from timber they chopped down. Believe it or not, these log cabins were sturdy and even rainproof. This style gained traction in the early 1900s when America's national parks built grand lodges, treating visitors to unforgettable mountain, geyser, and wildlife vistas. If you're lucky enough to have soaring ceilings, hand-hewn beams will emphasize the height. Hides and antlers are totally appropriate with this design style, strongly imparting a cabin-in-the-woods look. A sleek leather, suede, or two-tone sofa can add a contemporary spin, especially if it's low-profile and not overly tufted. Stone or exposed brick fireplaces are quintessentially Lodge Decor. A wooden coffee table fits right in, but to make it less predictable, top it with modern accessories like a sleek black bowl or a polished vase; go with two or three smaller wood tables of various heights; or choose a contrasting material like metal. A deep-green velvet headboard can provide a burst of color. Of course, if you want to go all-in with plaid or a modern Aztec pattern, choose one significant element: the bedding or the rug. If wood dressers and nightstands lend to a cohesive appearance, great. But if you feel they add too much wood, paint them a light color. But three historical phases seem to be dominant contributors to Bohemian Decor. First up: the nomadic Romani people. They originated in India and traveled through multiple countries before settling in Central Europe in the 1200s, bringing various global elements to today’s Boho style. Then we have Bohemianism from post-revolutionary France, which imparts the artistic, countercultural mood to the decor. Finally, the 1960s American Hippie movement lends a retro, carefree, and eco-friendly energy to the style.

Who Does Bohemian Decor Appeal To?

Typically, this decor style appeals to those who live a nontraditional life, like travelers, writers, and artists. Don’t be afraid to pile up the colorful, heavily patterned throw pillows. Since this decor style is unconventional, the seating can be, too: like a papasan chair or a rattan swinging chair if you’re feeling spicy. Plush cushions for floor seating can be stored in a wicker basket in the corner. The rug? Colorful Moroccan or simple sisal will do; feel free to layer. Other furnishings could include a simple, natural wood coffee table, preferably distressed; a bookshelf laden with novels, poetry, and travel guides; and a patina copper side table. Drape a chenille woven blanket across the back of a couch or loveseat. Adorn the walls with abstract or botanical art, or anything you’ve collected while traveling. So, perhaps most of all, this room should reflect your personal style preferences. For example, a Bohemian Decor bedroom palette could be bright and playful, soft and tranquil, or anything in between. A variety of looks can be accomplished simply through a thoughtful blend of colors, textures, patterns, and materials. For example, the headboard of your bed could be shiny brass, cozy rattan, live-edge wood, or an upscale upholstered velvet number. Bedding can start with a thick, cream-colored comforter and go from there with equally neutral yet textured pillows — or pillows in assorted hues and interesting shapes. Alternatively, pick a color, like blue, and display every variation of it in pillows and blankets, varying the patterns. A throw blanket with heavy fringe or tassels is unmistakably Boho. Layer in a textured wool rug in vivid or muted shades. A simple wooden dresser and nightstands will fit right in, or painted if you prefer. A gallery wall of abstract art framed in assorted colors of distressed wood frames would work well here, as would a grouping of distressed straw sun hats. However, if you happen to have a collection of colorful handmade tiles that you haggled for at a Guatemalan marketplace, your bathroom (or kitchen) would be ideal showcases. For the vanity, natural or brightly painted wood are great choices. You could also hang Turkish bath towels — all the rage for their lightweight absorbency — on a bamboo towel rack. Wooden cabinetry brings warmth, but you could also opt for exposed storage via open shelving; light travels more fluidly with open storage, making your kitchen feel larger. However, you could argue that Cottagecore’s roots go back at least as far as the 1700s, when French aristocrats like Marie Antoinette escaped the formalities of royalty to a no-frills, village retreat. No matter the era, Cottagecore embraces a simpler, slower, homespun approach.

Who it appeals to: Young adults are typically attracted to Cottagecore, but anyone who loves romance and nature may find it appealing. We recommend appointing a larger piece of furniture as your visual anchor. Think large, distressed wooden bookshelf filled with your favorite reads and accented with vining plants.

From there, multiple patterns and textures can really come into play. (More on that later.) Coastal decor is comfortable, easy, airy, and light. It blurs the lines between what you’d serendipitously find on the shores of your favorite beach with what you’d traditionally find indoors. This look beautifully incorporates elements of nature, such as various woods, crisp linens, glass, ceramic, jute, grasscloth, and cotton with coastal colors like blue, green, yellow, and coral. These complementing components are what make up Coastal design. (NOTE: Be careful not to confuse Coastal decor with Nautical decor, which is more the realm of anchors, sailboats, knotted ropes, etc., and can tend to be a bit kitschy.)

Where it originated: Coastal decor is by no means new. It emerged based on what was available to coastal populations centuries ago. Of course, adaptations have been made, but something interesting about this style is that you can vary the details depending on which coast you live on. For example, on the northeastern U.S. coastline, the type of wood used for interior design is often darker, while on southern coastlines, woods are lighter due to exposure of elements like sun and seawater. Driftwood is particularly big along the North Carolina coast. This is not a hard and fast rule, but displaying local elements can lend an authentic vibe to your space.

Who it appeals to: This look obviously appeals to those who love the coast. And to be clear, you don’t have to live on the waterfront to enjoy this style of decorating. Many homeowners in suburban areas are incorporating Coastal decor into their space. It’s for anyone desiring a peaceful, breezy home oasis that’s comfortably casual or even more formal, if you prefer.

A Breeze of Fresh Style

Coastal decor is all about the conversation between elements: mixing natural textures and introducing pops of color against a neutral, airy backdrop of whites, rustic woods, and smooth marble or glass. Your own personal taste can determine how tropical or colorful you want your Coastal decor to be.
