It’s a common problem in framing and hanging artwork, diploma frames or photos, one that the museums have overcome thanks to precise \u003Ca href=\"https://www.framedestination.com/blog/glazing/choosing-the-right-framing-glass-for-clarity-and-protection\">lighting and high-quality glazing\u003C/a>. \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>We’ll look at three ways to reduce reflections and glare on framed photos or artwork — from the simplest option to the go-to solutions used by the pros.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Option 1: Eliminate the Glazing aka Frame Glass or Acrylic \u003C/h2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The simplest option to eliminate reflection is to avoid the use of any \u003Ca href=\"https://www.framedestination.com/ctg/framing-supplies/glass-and-acrylic.html\">acrylic and replacement glass for picture framing\u003C/a> glazing in picture frames. The obvious advantage of this is a lower overall cost, as you are omitting a major part of the framing package. And with no glazing, there is little chance of reflection.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Unfortunately, this option has serious drawbacks. Because the artwork has no defense against curious fingers and atmospheric pollutants, dust and grime gather on the artwork itself, which can prove more difficult or impossible to clean. Gallery lighting is accomplished by positioning lighting directly above the artwork and fairly close to it, forcing the light to hit the artwork at a steep angle. \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>This angle allows you to only see reflections if you are looking up toward the art from beneath it. Your options here are to purchase picture frame lights, which can be attached to the wall behind picture frames. Or if you have appropriate lighting already in place, you can simply adjust where you hang the frames.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Option 3: Choose Non-Glare / Non Reflective Glazing\u003C/h2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Not many people will undergo lighting renovation just to avoid reflections in picture frames. An alternative is to purchase specialty \u003Ca href=\"https://www.framedestination.com/prod/sh/non-glare-acrylic-1-10-inch.html\">non-glare picture frame acrylic\u003C/a> or anti-reflective glass glazing. The non-glare acrylic glazing features an etched surface on one side that helps reduce the reflection. \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>However, the etching results in a loss of sharpness that is proportional to the distance between the artwork and the glazing; it is most apparent when using double mats. Because of this loss of sharpness, non-glare acrylic glazing is not suitable for shadow box framing.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Non-reflective Glass for Framing Pictures\u003C/h3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Non-reflective glass for framing pictures, on the other hand, uses a special type of coating to reduce reflection — but without the loss of sharpness seen in non-glare acrylic. ArtGlass Water White Anti-Reflective glass provides the full protection of glazing while making the glazing look practically invisible. Water white means this glass has reduced iron content to help eliminate the green tint normal glass contains providing even more clarity. This glass can also be purchased with an optional UV filter to help reduce fading of the artwork from UV radiation.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Anti-reflection is also available in acrylic. \u003Ca href=\"https://www.framedestination.com/prod/sh/optium-museum-acrylic.html\">Tru Vue Optium Museum \u003C/a>\u003Ca href=\"https://www.framedestination.com/prod/sh/optium-museum-acrylic.html\">Acrylic\u003C/a> is anti-reflective, water white, and has the UV filter. In addition to all these features, it is shatter resistant unlike glass. Museums often prefer acrylic to glass since broken glass can damage rare artwork. \u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>How you choose to reduce the glare on your picture frames depends on your budget and the importance of protecting the artwork itself. The mat board surrounds the artwork and adds extra space, so the frame must accommodate the size mat board you choose.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n\u003Cli>This \u003Cstrong> mat exact opening\u003C/strong> is the dimension of the hole cut in the mat.\u003C/li>\n\u003C/ul>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Example: A typical store-bought, ready-made frame for an 8×10 photo will have a mat exact opening of 7.5×9.5. This size mat board will \u003Cstrong>overlap the image\u003C/strong> by ¼ inch on all four sides, allowing it to hold the image down. The mat external size should match the dimensions of the glazing.\u003C/li>\n\u003C/ul>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Example: A mat board used to mount an 8×10 image in frame that is 11×14 will have a mat external size of exactly 11×14 plus or minus 1/16 inch.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Frame: What Size is 11x14?\u003C/h3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>This is where it gets a little tricky. For example, an 11x14  (which refers to the \u003Cstrong> inside perimeter\u003C/strong> of the frame) used to frame an 8x10 image could be referred to as both an 8x10 frame or an 11x14, assuming the complete frame package contains the appropriate mat board. However, a frame that is 11×14  with no mat will always be an 11×14 frame.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>So is the frame dimension 11×14 or 8×10? The answer is neither.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>If the frame size—not the mat opening—says 11×14, it is referring to the \u003Cstrong> inside dimension\u003C/strong>. However, the frame will be cut slightly larger (typically 1/8 inch). This extra space allows room for the glazing, \u003Ca href=\"https://www.framedestination.com/ctg/framing-supplies/foam-board.html\">mounting board\u003C/a> and mat board to fit without binding.
