Top pieces of corrugated cardboard with newspapers and blotting paper to create a sort of sandwich — this way, you can stack leaves on top of one another, in between the cardboard and newspapers. At the top of the press, use bricks or heavy books to add the necessary weight.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n\u003Cli>\u003Cstrong>Give Leaves a Glycerin Bath\u003C/strong>\u003C/li>\n\u003C/ul>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Instead of drying out the leaves, you can preserve them with glycerin, which keeps them pliable instead of brittle, which occurs when pressing and drying them. Note that the glycerin will affect the colors of the leaves, with yellows doing the best; red and orange may take on a brownish hue.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Mix two parts hot water and one part glycerin, which you can find at pharmacies, health stores and online, in a wide pan deep enough to submerge the leaves. Lay the leaves in the pan and pour the solution over them. Remove after about three to four days, or when the leaves feel supple.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>You can also use this method to preserve whole branches with leaves attached. Crush the ends of the branches with a hammer and stand them upright in a bucket with the solution. These mounts are often used with thicker backing boards instead of foam boards, as the items they support are heavy.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Double-sided tape\u003C/strong>: Used for replaceable, lightweight items, double-sided tape is one of the fastest and easiest ways to create a shadow box.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Hot glue\u003C/strong>: Already a must-have for DIYers, hot glue can be used for a variety of materials, including paper and plastic. Hot glue is not particularly strong, so it is often reserved for lightweight items, such as plastic toys.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Craft or fabric glue\u003C/strong>: Often PVA adhesives, these glues are multipurpose and can provide a strong bond for a variety of materials. The glue is permanent and can leave residue or cause damage, however, so valuable items should not be attached with craft glue.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Silicone adhesive\u003C/strong>: Silicone adhesive is very different from other glues, and it’s often used as a household sealant. But because it can be easily removed without leaving a residue, it is used to mount various items—even stone and glass—securely without damaging them. It is the adhesive of choice for many framers, but it has to be cured for 24 hours outside the framing package, as it will give off certain gases.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>There are countless very creative ways to attach items to shadow boxes like a professional, including using tulle: the netting often found in wedding gowns and prom dresses.
