Can I order a custom picture frame size?

Yes, under components, select the frame pieces you need such as moulding and mat board and just select “custom” in the size pull-down after you click on “more info”. You can change the quantity in the shopping cart to see volume discount pricing. Click here: for custom picture frame help.

Are your picture frames shipped pre-assembled?

All wood frames are shipped fully assembled. They are professionally and permanently hand glued and nailed together. Nielsen ready made picture frames and our FDI ready made picture frames are shipped assembled. Our custom metal frames are usually shipped assembled. Sometimes if only the metal moulding is ordered or for large quantities of picture frames we may ship them disassembled. If frame assembly is an issue for you please leave a note in the special instructions section of the checkout page.

Are your picture frames safe for all types of artwork?

Our frames provide exceptional protection for most types of artwork, including 99% of photographs, and all inkjet prints.  Acrylic glazing can develop a static charge so it should not be used to frame artwork rendered in loose mediums such as pastel or charcoals. In addition, there are two types of photographic print processes that are very acidic and require a special non-buffered mat. One is Cyano, a black and white process and the other is Dye Transfer, a color process.

Are there any special care instructions for Acrylic?

Yes. Acrylic is sensitive to scratching. DO NOT USE window cleaning sprays, kitchen scouring compounds, or solvents such as acetone, gasoline, or lacquer thinner to clean it. Dry or gritty cloths may cause surface scratches. Soft damp cleaning cloths such as 3M Scotch-Brite High Performance Cleaning Cloth should be used with light pressure and clean water. Dry or dust with soft damp cloth or chamois.

A great acrylic cleaner is Brillianize (www.brillianize.com). It will clean the acrylic, kill the static charge and leave the surface smooth and more dust resistant than normal. It won’t remove scratches. However, it does make scratches a little less noticeable. A great cleaning cloth that is kind of like microfiber cleaning technology combined with a chamois is Craftics (www.craftics.com) Microfiber Smooth Towel. It will safely pull dust and smudges off without scratching the surface. We will be adding these products to the website in the near future.

Can I buy your picture frames without certain components such as mat or glazing?

Yes.

Can I buy separate components of your picture frames such as the mat or backboard?

Yes.

Why would I want to use conservation or museum quality frames?

If you are going through the trouble of framing and exhibiting your artwork, then you should consider proper protection. Ask yourself if you would like to preserve the item for future generations. Although monetary value is an important consideration, do not forget sentimental value. I was recently reminded of this when viewing a friend's photo restoration samples and noticed they are family portraits, not priceless artwork.

Is ACID Free good enough for conservation?

No. The acid in paper products is just one enemy of your artwork. Other enemies include airborne pollutants and ultraviolet radiation. Museum-grade mat board is also lignin-free, pH neutral (buffered), sulfur-free, and certified free of other contaminants. The glazing should provide 98% UV filtering. The Bainbridge products used in our frames are also manufactured with the Artcare Archival System which traps and neutralizes external pollutants and harmful chemicals. The matboard and mounting board should also meet the following specs:
